Journal Cleanup

I noticed that the Database Journal has a janitor method but the File 
Journal does not.  What is the proper way to clean old revisions using 
the File Journal?

Also, the wiki mentions that the journal cleanup can cause problems but 
does not elaborate on them.  Is there anyplace that explains the 
workings of the Jackrabbit journal in more detail?
