Maven: archetype.xml descriptor cannot be found

Hi,

It surprises me not having heard about this yet, so I might be doing
something wrong.

Running the maven command as per the tutorial (with/without the
archetypeVersion parameter), I get the following error:

> [ERROR] BUILD ERROR
> [INFO] ------------------------------------------------------------------------
> [INFO] Error creating from archetype
>
> Embedded error: The META-INF/maven/archetype.xml descriptor cannot be found.

It seems to me as if quickstart-5.0.6.jar contains
META-INF/archetype.xml instead. I'd move it if I could but I guess I'd
have to sign the jar which I can't. In any case, I'm puzzled by the
fact that I can't find any previous reports on this. I encountered
this a little more than a week ago, and thought things were just in
the middle of a change, but today is no luck either. If it's any help,
I'm using Maven 2.0.7 on Debian Lenny. I could try getting maven from
upstream, but don't have Windows handy.

Does anyone have any ideas? Am I doing something wrong or should I
wait for things to clear up?

Grateful for any responses,

Martin

Martin,

I agree with you...I think I initially tried gcj, but quickly gave up
and switched to sun's jdk. I've used jdk 1.5 and 1.6 both, and haven't
noticed issues with either one.

Thanks for the reply, Andy. I've managed to sort this one out. I
decided to try the JumpStart download, but I couldn't get it running
either (JBoss failed to load some stuff). Google hinted me on this one
however, and by changing from gcj to sun's java 1.5 I could start it.
And sure enough, the quickstart now works just fine.

All in all, I can report that gcj (on Debian Lenny at least) is a
no-no both for the quickstart and the JumpStart, but that sun's java
1.5 works just fine with both (haven't tried java 6).

The command to change ones java environment is
update-java-alternatives and I'm looking forward to finding out which
parts of my system I just broke. :)

Maybe I should have realized this from documentation somewhere, or
maybe it should be recorded that there are problems with gcj. Even
better, I'd be glad to assist in whatever extent possible if someone
wants to track this down.

Regards,

Martin

Hi Martin,

I'm on Debian Lenny also, and I haven't had any issues. Although I
believe I was on T5.0.5 when I installed the quickstart, not 5.0.6.
