The current 'ant' setup is really hard to build correctly and near impossible to load into IntelliJ to do any debugging on a piggybank feature.
So yes, from me there is a wish to have this.
I think the most important thing is that "it just works" when loading the project from scratch into something like the IntelliJ IDE.
From my perspective Maven would be fine.
