Wing Yew up on mailing lists suggests it could work with classifiers:

you could take a look at
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/avro/tags/release-1.7.3/lang/java/mapred/pom.xml
to see how they do it with classifiers.

My understanding was that we could not use classifiers but I could try the above suggestion; would be easier than changing version.
