Guide on how to use the SOAP API

Hello all,
I'm starting to go deeply into the API... and I've seen at least 2 why to do
a soap call from the client, using the Call object and also using the
SOAPHTTPConnector.
But nowhere there is something that explain the diffrences.. and the API
docs explain just the "signature" of methods, but don't explain what a
method does and the meaning of parameters....
