[Issue 126371] New: Disappearing Vertical Text button in Drawing Toolbar in Writer v.4.1.1

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126371

          Issue ID: 126371
        Issue Type: DEFECT
           Summary: Disappearing Vertical Text button in Drawing Toolbar
                    in Writer v.4.1.1
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: Other
                OS: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P5
         Component: formatting
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: prattleonboyo@gmail.com

The problem of the disappearing vertical text button in the Drawing toolbar
**despite** having been checked to appear under customize in Writer persists in
v.4.1.1 at least in the Lbuntu 15.04 OS.

the usual fix under tools > options > languages > CTL as reported solved for
v.3.x on the user forum does not work on this version. It also has not been
reported previously from what I've seen when I checked before reporting this
bug.

This problem has been on-going for the past several versions of AOO.

--- Comment #1 from Julia Balashova <ju...@unity3d.com> ---
I am able to reproduce on AOO 4.2.0; build AOO420m1(Build:9800) - Rev. 1692551
Windows 7 Enterprise SP1

1. Go View menu -> Toolbars -> Drawing. Drawing toolbar appears
2. On Drawing toolbar click ’drop down’ button. Context menu is opened
3. Select Visible Buttons item in the opened menu
4. Click ‘Vertical Text’ item

Actual result:
It is not possible to add ‘Vertical Text’ button to Drawing toolbar (it appears
just for a second - but then disappears)

The problem also occurs with the next buttons of Drawing toolbar:
- Vertical Callouts

Standard toolbar:
- Data Sources

Form Control toolbar:
- Wizards On/Off

Formatting toolbar:
- Left-To-Right
- Right-To-Left

Buttons of new/customized toolbars:
- Chinese Conversion

Looks like this problem is more general and doesn’t relate to ‘Vertical Text’
button to Drawing toolbar only

[Issue 126371] Disappearing Vertical Text button in Drawing Toolbar in Writer v.4.1.1

--- Comment #3 from camelia.chisalita@gmail.com ---
I have addressed this matter as a design issue. Hence, my investigation focuses
on discussing if the feature’s behavior *should be* or *should be not* the way
it is. This means whether Writer should expose this behavior or not, instead of
discussing if the it behaves the way it does or not.

I have attached my investigation report to this comment (Design Issue).

I have replicated the issue on the following configuration:
- Operating System: Windows 10 Home, 64-bit;
- Processor: Intel Core i5, 1.7GHz;
- RAM Memory: 4Gb;
- Open Office 4.1.3.

I have developed two working scenarios:
- A: when Asian Support Language (ASL) is not enabled;
- B: when Asian Support Language (ASL) is enabled;

Scenario A
-----------

Question: Should the user be able to add the Vertical Text button to the
Content List from the Customize window if ALS is not enabled?

Answer (my opinion): NO

The button may be present in the list but *disabled* and therefore the users
will not be able to add it to the Drawing toolbar.

Argument:
This is because the Vertical Text button will not be added to the Drawing
toolbar anyway. Otherwise, adding it will break the consistency with the
designed feature (i.e., Vertical Text button is available when ALS is enabled
only, and ALS now is not enabled).

Scenario B
-----------

Question: Should the user be able to remove the Vertical Text Button from the
Content List from the Customize window if ALS is enabled?

Answer (my opinion): NO.

The button may be present in the list but disabled and the users should not be
able to remove from the Drawing toolbar.

Argument:
The Vertical Text button should be selected, but presented as disabled,
otherwise the removal of the Vertical Button will break the consistency with
the designed feature (i.e., Vertical Text button is available when ALS is
enabled only, and ALS is still enabled).

Other aspects approached by the attached report:
-------------------------------------

- impact on the user and how other text processors address the Vertical Text
button issue;
- context analysis of this issue: Issue 54423
(https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=54423) is similar bug that discusses
possible solution for the design issue;
- further investigation may consider the User Guide
(https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Getting_Started/Adding_and_formatting_text)
and or development documents.
