[jira] Created: (AXIS-1806) axis does not include license agreements for third party jar files it re-distributes
axis does not include license agreements for third party jar files it re-distributes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Key: AXIS-1806
URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AXIS-1806
Project: Axis
Type: Bug
Versions: 1.2RC2, 1.2
Environment: All
Reporter: Dan Armbrust
Axis is in violation of mutiple license agreements with the jar files that you are shipping - namely - the licenses for
activation.jar, commons*.jar, jaxrpc.jar, log4j-1.2.8.jar, mail.jar, saaj.jar, and wsdl4j.jar.
All of these licenses explictly require that the license be included with any distribution - this came to my attention when I tried to distribute something that uses axis - and I had to track down licenses for all of these files.
I can't be sure that I have the right license, however - as I don't know what versions of each of these files you are using. If there is a different license for different versions, I may not have the right one.
You should really stay on top of this stuff.

[jira] Commented: (AXIS-1806) axis does not include license agreements for third party jar files it re-distributes

Tom Jordahl commented on AXIS-1806:
-----------------------------------
We build our code for jaxrpc.jar and saaj.jar, so our license covers those. We generally do not ship activation or mail, perhaps these just got included in an RC by mistake (they are not checked in to our tree).
As for the others, we probably only have to worry about wsdl4j.jar as the others are covered by the Apache license (which we do ship) and we have been shipping wsdl4j.jar from the first, which doesn't make it right, but it isn't a new thing.
Thanks for pointing this out.

It may be a good idea to include the version of each jar file in the file name. The log4j file already includes the version number (log4j-1.2.8.jar).

------------------------------------
You are correct - I forgot that I added the mail and activation to my local build myself.
It would be nice if there was a license readme file in there that explained what is covered by what - When I started digging through the libraries I assumed that the jaxrpc and saaj jars came from sun, and were therefore under the sun license.
So that just leaves the wsdl4j.jar that is missing a license.
I agree, it shouldn't matter, but our lawyers are finicky about this sort of stuff :)
Thanks for the clarifications.
