new committer and PMC member: Gavin McDonald

The Project Management Committee (PMC) for Apache Forrest
has asked Gavin McDonald to become a committer and
member of the PMC, and we are pleased to announce that
he has accepted.

Gavin has been around our community for some time. He has been gradually
immersing himself in our community, striving to understand important
parts of Forrest, giving excellent user perspective feedback and
thorough testing. He is becoming increasingly involved with developer
tasks, in particular he has started to help manage JIRA, and admin task
that is overlooked by most committers.

Furthermore, he is happy to become involved in "sticky" threads, trying
to find a sensible compromise to any given situation.

Being a committer enables easier contribution to the
project since there is no need to go via the patch
submission process. This should enable better productivity.
Being a PMC member enables assistance with the management
and to guide the direction of the project.

A very warm welcome to Gavin.

Thanks Tim, no doubt it will be needed.

A good place to start as any, must check if some are not relevant any more
Or need updating in light of commits since patched were submitted, I'll
look.

Will do, thanks Ross.

Welcome Gavin,

Now you can apply some of those patches you have in our patch queue.

Please remember that we operate a commit then review policy. This means
that other devs will continue to monitor your work and will flag up any
potential problems we spot.

Sometimes this may mean reverting a commit. This is never a comment on
your work, only a method of ensuring the quality of our commits. It is
difficult for a single person to know all the ins-and-outs of our code
base, therefore we have many eyes monitoring changes.

See recent commits by Thorsten and myself for examples such monitoring
and flagging of concerns by other devs.

Please also be aware that you are now jointly responsible for reviewing
other peoples commits and reviewing patches in Jira. Please be sure to
speak up if you see something wrong with any of our work.

Actually this applies to all people on this list - you can monitor svn
commits by subscribing to our SVN commit mail list [1].

I saw a related issue on the infra@ list the other day. The fix was
to add your apache email address to the -allow list of svn@f.a.o

Whoever moderates it can check it out?

I did this and after the username password prompts, allowed me to commit no
problem. I checked on forrest svn via the web and the file was there.

Did that, did not ask me for username password this time, allowed me to
Delete no problem. I checked on forrest svn via the web and the file had
gone.

Strange though, no commit messages came through from the svn@ list.
Perhaps I was too quick in deleting ?

Thanks to you Gavin and welcome.

As others have said, we can all help you to
become comfortable. Take it easy and remember
that if you are unsure about committing something
then you can still put a patch in Jira.

Start by putting your entry in site-author/content/xdocs/who.xml

Then try adding a small text file to be sure that
your SVN client is configured properly, e.g.

cd $FORREST_HOME
echo "hello" > test.txt
svn add test.txt
svn status
svn commit test.txt

svn delete test.txt
svn commit test.txt

Thanks everyone, I am pleased to be on-board.

A little more reading to do so hopefully by the weekend I will make a start
with a few small commits (so you don't have much to revert :) )

Quick, back up the Servers :)
