cvs watch equivalent in svn

does any one know if there is a svn equivalent of the watch ability of 
cvs, (if not now perhaps in future versions ?)

what is the closest method available in svn, compared to cvs watch ?

scripting on the serverside seems to help, but the watching on specific 
files/directories seems not to be possible for certain users...
