A few things with this change:
a) broken patches fail significantly faster
b) patches that only add files are less likely to go belly up

> patchfiles shouldn't try using patch on files that appear to be git format-patch files.  Probably just need to check if they have a subject line or some other metadata that shows that they aren't a simple unified diff.
