http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.uk
  inima.al soros.al tirana.al uniti.al upt.al <- these are grandfathered
domains and do not allow 3rd level registrations.
  com.ch gov.ch net.ch org.ch <- these are not 2nd level tlds.
  com.li gov.li net.li org.li <- these are not 2nd level tlds.

fwiw, yes the updates can be in patch/release form to update the default list,
but there's also the util_rb_tld and util_rb_2tld configuration options which
are there so that we can update the list via sa-update in between releases.

it's a feature in 3.2. :)

[Bug 5677] [review] New TLD list

Posted by bu...@bugzilla.spamassassin.org.
http://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=5677

------- Additional Comments From dallase@uribl.com 2007-11-07 12:29 -------
i think it would be nice to have a seperate "psuedo-tld" list for the domains
that arent real tlds/cctlds, but they host lots of subdomains that get abuse.

if we had something like that, it would also be nice to have a config option for
crafting up the uris, as many of the can go both ways, meaning
subdomain.webhost.tld or webhost.tld/~subdomain/

craft_uri http://www.geocities.com/(.+)\/ $1.geocities.com
craft_uri http://xoomer.alice.it/(.+)\/ $1.alice.it
etc.

then the crafted uri gets pushed on the array of uris so we can get a uribl
check against it, as well as the base domain. a config option to
enable/disable this behavior could also be done.

as of right now, we rely on the abuse department of every hoster to get these
things shut down, but that doesnt keep the crap out of the inbox.

For what it's worth I'm doing something interesting with the registry varrier. I
made a DNS lookup that tells you where it is. I'm using the lists posted here to
generate the zone files.

dig domain.com.rb.junkemailfilter.com

It returns 127.0.0.1 for one level, 127.0.0.2 for 2 level, 127.0.0.3 for 3 level.

Anyhow - if SA used this or set up something like this then you could update the
list any time without having to update the software.

We considered something like this for SURBL, but decided it doesn't make much
sense to set up the infrastructure or use the DNS queries and traffic repeatedly
serving up essentially invariant information such as reserved SLDs. Hard coding
it into programs may be somewhat inelegant, but is perhaps more appropriate to
the task, and it can still be updated through patches. Also spammer abuse of
these domains is much less than .com, .net, .info, SLD.cn, etc. In a nutshell,
highly static, relatively infrequently used information such as this arguably
does not lend itself well to a DNS list. YMMV.

My source for some of these was the Firefox browser project, so some may not
have original research behind them. I may have researched some of the others,
but don't have details handy. Dallas's observations would be welcomed at least
until more research can be done. We don't see some of these more obscure
domains abused very often so the practical implications may be minor either way.

uh, the idea is to *avoid* DNS lookups. ;)

wow Jeff -- you've made a mess of the bug! ;) thanks for the fixes, though.

Mr. Alex says the following are not 2nd level tlds.

  com.ch gov.ch net.ch org.ch
  com.li gov.li net.li org.li

I'm not sure why http://wiki.mozilla.org/TLD_List thinks differently?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.ch - Structure: Registrations permitted at second
level
http://www.whois365.com/en/listtld/europe - Allow 3rd Level: No
