[Proposal] AltRMI gaining steam, joins incubator project

Hi folks,

We have been working on the AltRMI project as part of the Avalon project
at Jakarta for a year now. It is an RPC mechanism like RMI, but simpler
and more transparent than RMI. You could think of it as .Net's Remoting
for Java. To read more about it see :
 http://jakarta.apache.org/avalon/excalibur/altrmi/

Avalon (the project) is undergoing a large change as it moves towards
http://avalon.apache.org status. Part of the change means that
sub-projects that are not related to the framework, a reference
container or highly reusable avalon-dependant components are to move out
of Avalon so that we no longer have the massive confusion as to what
Avalon's aims are.

AltRMI now no longer mandates Avalon-Framework usage. It is still
there, but only used for some enabler classes for when you want to use
AltRMI in conjunction with Avalon-Framework enabled environments.

So to recap, this code is already at Apache. It is being used in
companies and other open source projects*, might be more suitable at
incubator than Avalon. The former being a hothouse, the latter a niche.
In terms of status, AltRMI is nearly ready to flip from beta to 1.0.

I'm interested in the feedback from folks here. There are between four
and seven committers with Avalon kudos who've been active with AltRMI,
that would require commit privs to Incubator.

This a good fit? Thoughts?

Regards,

- Paul

I'm doing it piece by piece. Now AltRMI, then we'll see.

+0 it seems sensible, but I abstain on the grounds that the AltRMI
committers (as listed) probably have a better idea of what is best.

In general, what projects will be spun off? I remember P Donald
proposing some reorg, but that was met with a quite lukewarm reception.

non-binding +1. AltRMI is real cool tech, and it is ready for and in
need of a bigger community.

[VOTE] AltRMI joining incubator project

AltRMI [1] is a project made by some Avalon committers that is already
used in Apache and non-Apache projects. It's a from-scratch replacement
for RMI, which is the java API for remote method invocation.

Avalon is reorganizing and spinning of projects that are out of scope,
and AltRMI is one of those.

I'm asking for a vote that the Incubator accepts this small community so
that it can keep growing as it has been doing since now in Avalon.

I propose that

  - the project be assigned a CVS space in

      incubator/altrmi

  - a mailing list called (alternative suggested names welcome)

     projects@incubator.apache.org

is set up for all projects that will live in the incubator
(when the traffic is high enough they can ask to spin off their own)

  - these initial contributors to the effort will have commit access to
    the incubator CVS

     - hammant@apache.org
     - vinayc@apache.org
     - leif@apache.org
     - jefft@apache.org
     - proyal@apache.org
     - blorisch@apache.org

  - a site space is given to be used under

     incubator.apache.org/projects/altrmi

I will be the incubator PMC member that will overlook this project here,
and will work with this project to define ASAP a nice landing place for
the project, that will be under one of the Apache Projects.

Finally, a note about a typical java issue: the package name will be

   org.apache.altrmi

My vote: +1

Incubator welcomes AltRMI :-)

Posted by Nicola Ken Barozzi <ni...@apache.org>.
Ok, AltRMI is now in incubation :-)

The CVS module is

       incubator-altrmi

With commit privs to all incubator PMCers and
  avail|hammant,vinayc,leif,jefft,proyal,blorisch|incubator-altrmi
CVS commit messages go to cvs@incubator.apache.org.

We have a mailing list called

      projects@incubator.apache.org

      to subscribe
        projects-subscribe@incubator.apache.org

Please prepend all messages on AltRMI with [AltRMI]
(when the traffic is high enough they can ask to spin off their own)

The eybrowse archive will be set up in the next days, along with the
incubator lists' ones.

For the project there is a site space given to be used under

      incubator.apache.org/projects/altrmi

As previously said:

> I will be the incubator PMC member that will overlook this project here,

Tomorrow, now it's late here ;-)

Also, to be clear, there is nothing that is mandated to how the project
is build and how the website is generated. In practice, it means that
the project does not have to use Forrest, which is used for the general
incubator pages.

The only thing requested is that the project has links to the incubator
and is clearly marked as being in incubation. Maybe adding the incubator
eggs somewhere? Come up with something fancy and we may use it for
future projects ;-)

> Thank you all for the help and the patience :-)

Good work! :-)

[VOTE:RESULTl] AltRMI joins incubator project

Posted by Nicola Ken Barozzi <ni...@apache.org>.
It has been decided by the Avalon and Incubator communities and PMCs
that Apache Avalon Excalibur AltRMI [1] project moves to the incubator
with the final goal of becoming soon part of an Apache project.

Therefore, as a PMC member of both Avalon and Incubator, and following
the results of a vote that took place on both projects, I request that:

  - the project is assigned a CVS space in

      incubator/altrmi

      * root, please assign the commit privs there for these
      initial project committers:

       - hammant@apache.org
       - vinayc@apache.org
       - leif@apache.org
       - jefft@apache.org
       - proyal@apache.org
       - blorisch@apache.org

  - a mailing list called (alternative suggested names welcome)

     projects@incubator.apache.org

is set up for all projects that will live in the incubator
(when the traffic is high enough they can ask to spin off their own)

    * apmail, can you please set it up and have it archived
      on eyebrowe?

  - a site space is given to be used under

     incubator.apache.org/projects/altrmi

      * root, please assign the commit privs there too for these
      initial project committers.

I will be the incubator PMC member that will overlook this project here,
and will work with this project to define ASAP a nice landing place for
the project, that will be under one of the Apache Projects.
I will update our site to reflect these changes.

Finally, a note about a typical java issue: the package name will be

   org.apache.altrmi

Thank you all for the help and the patience :-)

The EOB usage is only one way. Tonight for example I was pairing with
Charles Lowell with a project that he is co-lead for MarathonMan @
Sourceforge ( http://marathonman.sourceforge.net/ ). It is a kick-ass
GUI testing framework. It needs to move to be more like Cactus for
various reasons As such the team needs RPC steerage of the testee app.
AltRMI looks to be the appropriate beast after a small amount of
experimentation.

And I'd prefer it if they were kept separate. One is to do with
Client/Server, the other to do with Application serving.

> Wouldn't it make sense to apply EOB for Incubation and make AltRMI be
> part of that project?

It might. I do not want to have package rename shenanigans too often.
I'd prefer org.apache.eob for when EOB arrives at Apache. For that
matter Id prefer org.apache.altrmi as it goes 1.0, but I know not the
rules for incubator.

> Incubator is not a landing ground but a passage. So the question is,
> where would the AltRMI committers want it to land?

I think they are OK with incubator.

Contributors thus far are Vinayc@apache.org, leif@apache.org,
jefft@apache.org, proyal@apache.org, donaldp@apache.org
blorisch@apache.org as well as myself
I'd have to ask Jeff and Leif and Berin though for their opinions.

It will take its time, but the potential package schenanigans are a factor.

Hi Paul,
nice to see you here :-)

Let me express a thought/suggestion.

EOB (www.enterpriseobjectbroker.org) is an excellent piece of software
that uses AltRMI strongly, and committers on both projects seem quite
tied together.

Wouldn't it make sense to apply EOB for Incubation and make AltRMI be
part of that project?

Incubator is not a landing ground but a passage. So the question is,
where would the AltRMI committers want it to land?

Jakarta?
Top Level Project?
In Apache-EOB?
