Template app

Hi 
I am trying create a templating program that generates layouts plus html code for use in an email marketing program or simple web pages, for the templating engine I can't seem to get mvel out fo my mind although I am condering freemarker or string template, since i have never than this before nor built a template application does anyone have ideas on how to get start on the Sling platform?
