Best way to automatically tell "any" has been used?

If I have an object which has an "any" field and I am not sure at
runtime if it has been set or not, what is the best way to determine??
 
I know I can use a Cursor to peek inside the document, however I was
wondering if there is any sort of "isAnySet" sort of operation...I'd
like to avoid using a cursor unless absolutely necessary....
