[Bug 5008] New: spamd protocol: user's language

http://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=5008

           Summary: spamd protocol: user's language
           Product: Spamassassin
Version: SVN Trunk (Latest Devel Version)
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P5
         Component: spamc/spamd
        AssignedTo: dev@spamassassin.apache.org
        ReportedBy: radek@pld-linux.org

The spamd protocol should allow users to specify a preferred language.
Right now it's derived from environment of user running spamd, and can
be a wrong choice for clients on multi-user systems.

How about an (optional) Accept-Language header field and corresponding
user_prefs option preferred_languages, listing ISO country codes in order
of preference?

Defaults: first config option, then environment; both in spamd and spamc.

Related issues:
 * language for report_template
 * rule descriptions
 * which localised rules should run (separate bug, separate header/option?)

I think we may have discussed the idea of allowing users to select their
language from the user_prefs file at runtime; I'm pretty sure we didn't consider
the idea of sending it over from spamc, though.

Those are two separate issues, IMO; the latter functionality relies on the
former being implemented first, I think, but they can (and imo should) be
considered separately to avoid conflating too many issues into one.

(also, yes, we'd have to have a way to hold multiple languages at the same time
-- it might be possible to keep that out of RAM however.)

It has been awhile since I messed with the Config code, but isn't all of the
language stuff parsed at load time as well. This would require keeping all
languages in memory.

I also think this is a dupe, I don't have time to search but I swear we've
discussed it before.

I'm not sure the spamd protocol is an appropriate place. we generally keep
user-specific configuration in the user_prefs file, and not with the spamc.

in other words, I like the 'preferred_languages' idea, but not sure about
the 'Accept-Language' idea...

What if you're running spamd without user config? You still communicate
something.
