In the recent issue of Linux Format, they explain how to set up
Subversion to work with Apache2. Is it possible to set it up with Apache
1? What is the procedure (or what piece of obvious documentation have I
missed <g>)

No, you need Apache2, Apache 1.3 won't work with Subversion. If you
have to use Apache 1.3, you can either run a separate Apache2 server for
Subversion, or use svnserve instead.
