This shouldnt, as we now use the NIO client.. and not the commons sender
for outgoing transport anymore.. Anyway I will validate this doesnt have
an impact

There are no open issues targeted for 3.1 RC1. Folks, shall I call a

It seems this has been applied ... so does this mean HttpClient 3.1
can now be released?

I'm working my way towards a JMeter release, and would like to include
the latest HttpClient jars if possible.

No big deal if that is not about to happen - the users can always
update the HttpClient jar separately.

Hi Bindul,

An introduction of a new method to the HttpConnectionManager interface
would render HttpClient 3.1 binary incompatible with HttpClient 3.x. We
just can't do that. This will have to wait until 4.0

Oleg

There is DummyConnectionManager - an inner class of ProxyClient.

Besides, there are three implementations in the test cases -
TimeoutHttpConnectionManager (an inner class of
TestIdleConnectionTimeout), AccessibleHttpConnectionManager (a
subclass of SimpleHttpConnectionManager) and
NoHostHttpConnectionManager.

Which is the third one? I know only of SimpleHCM and MultiThreadedHCM.
http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/httpclient/apidocs/org/apache/commons/httpclient/HttpConnectionManager.html

I don't think this is worth breaking compatibility. Applications will
typically deal with only one type of connection manager, so casting
from the interface to the implementation should be acceptable. Or
keeping the connection manager in an attribute with the class type.

HttpConn 4.0 will have shutdown() in the connection manager interface.

All,

An email on the user thread[1][2] got me thinking. Would it be worth
to add the <code>shutdown()</code> method to the HttpConnectionManager
interface? Two of the three implementations of the interface already
support the shutdown method.

If there is consensus on implementing this, I could provide a patch
(and a JIRA issue) for this.

I understand that this might break compatibility for applications
which have implemented their own connection managers. So, if the
method is introduced, is it worth getting into 3.1 or should it be
deffered until 4.0?

Bindul

Roland,

It looks like we have something we should look into before new release
is cut

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HTTPCLIENT-633

3.1-RC1 maybe? RCs are used in the rest of Commons to carry a different
meaning these days. However, official RCs helped us a lot in the 2.0 and
3.0 days. When the final versions were released they turned out to be
quite stable, so I am kind of in favor of continuing this practice.

Hi Oleg,

there are 10 fixes in the new 3.1 release [1]. Many of them are minor,
others fix things that were obviously broken in older final releases
too. I'm OK with a release, but I'm unsure whether it should be the
final one or another beta.

Any other opinions on this?

cheers,
