I committed some changes to the README that should clarify the two
ways to get your hands on the source.

I saw that too.  IMO, not optional, but to further complicate matters, the
instructions have always been about how to get up from cloning the repo.
The TLF and now BlazeDS sources get packaged in the release artifact so
those steps don’t apply when using the source package.

Not sure but it was previously optional. I've not checked what happens if you don't have the blaze DS repo checked out.
