[users@httpd] how to check to see if a module has loaded ...?

I'm trying to get php (recent snapshots) to work with apache 2.0.43.

php compiled fine. I've included the LoadModule directive. apache
didn't complain. But there was no evidence it actually loaded
(e.g. php wasn't listeed in the [notify] startup log line nor does
php actually work).

Can anyone suggest how I might debug this further? How can I tell
if the module was actually loaded?
