OO
How can I stop it writing my letters for me. It doesn’t know what I want to say!
For me it is totally unusable.

Don,
I guess you're talking about the word completion feature.
Go to the menu Tools>AutoCorrect Options and in the last tab (Word Completion), disable the feature.
Please post this kind of question to the users mailing list instead of the dev mailing list.

Don,
I guess you're talking about the word completion feature.

Suddenly after I installed Thunderbird 19 b1, my filter for unsubscribed users worked again for the dev list! has anyone noticed that?
The weird thing is that it works for the dev list but not for the users list. The filter applies before the mail are redirected to the relevant folders (one for dev one for users)...
NB: I've not seen any bug fix related to the header problem in filters in the release notes of TB.

While this might improve the handling of messages, this would require
patching ezmlm-idx like the other options, so it is not applicable
either, unfortunately.

I just thought about another way: today the delivered-to header for moderation is the second one in the code of the email. I guess that the TB filter sees only the first field.
Could it be possible to swap the 2 delivered-to headers so that the one for moderation is the first one?
Would it have an impact or not on the list management?

The best solution IMHO.
A dev mailing list is clearly for advanced users to talk about code and so on.
There are many questions posted here that should be on the users mailing in fact. That would spare a lot of time not spent in reading and answering when standard users could.

Thanks for tracking down a definitive answer for that.
We do, however, have one option, a more extreme one. That would be to
disallow posts from non-subscribers altogether. So keep the dev list
for subscribers only and get on with our work. And use another list,
like users, where anyone can post. Then the expectations are clear on
that list: safer to always cc the poster. We do that 100% of the
time. Or you could even have a new list dedicated to simple one-time
queries that we use for that kind of thing.
Weird, but it might work.
Or less weird -- what if we had a script that parsed through the mbox
files on a daily (weekly?) basis and flagged all responses to mess
from non-subscribers? It might even be possible to then automatically
forward such responses.

It has been a priority of mine, but the results are not encouraging.
A couple months ago, in November, I contacted Infra to find out whether
this was feasible and it isn't. These are the three options I gave them:
a) Adding an "X-Apache-moderated: yes" header or similar when a message
is held for moderation ("Delivered-To" will occur multiple times and
won't work)
b) adding a "[moderated]" tag at the end of the subject
c) setting Reply-To to list+sender instead of list only in this case
Neither of this is feasible with ezmlm-idx, the software we are using.
Well, it's software, then... I subscribed the ezmlm-idx list, and I sent
a similar request to them. You can see it here:

(you can see only the title at the moment because their site crashes,
but needless to say I got no answers).
So, to the best of my knowledge and effort, we can't improve this
situation. Of course, if somebody wants to submit a patch to ezmlm-idx

ezmlm-idx dates a few years back...
The best advice I can give at the moment is to use "Reply All" when
someone is clearly new here.

There had been talks some weeks ago about changing the headers to make a dedicated one for moderated messages since the delivered-to header was not designed to be used more than once in a message. But no change after the list address change.
Could it be a priority for the near future to improve (very) new users experience?

That may be right. Actually, I understood Don Warne's message the way
Donald did. I think he meant that OO is useless for him and he wasn't
talking about the mailing list. He'd better come back to us and explain
what he actually means or we'll have to continue guessing, as his

you may have accidentally enabled line numbering. please open "tools/line numbering" and uncheck "show numbering" if it's checked.

Okay, that sounds like you've got numbered bullets turned on...it
thinks you're making a numbered list of items instead of just text.
Not that familiar with that option, so I'm going to refer you to the
users mailing list. The dev list is more for people who make changes
to the software.

If Apache OpenOffice automatically writes letters for you without your
intervention, I´d say it´s time to call an exorcist or other private
practitioner of the arts of magic.
