Subversion Hackathon at SubConf 2009 -- are you coming?

Committers,

I've traded some emails with Alexandra Bleicher, one of the organizers of
the SubConf conference, about the prospects of securing some space and a
network connection for a hackathon at the conference this year. She seems
keen on the idea.

The conference proper is on Wednesday and Thursday, October 28-29. Prior to
that, on Tuesday the 27th, there is a day of workshops and, that evening,
another developer roundtable such as we had last year.

If I understand the deal that's being offered correctly, it appears to allow
for us to have the room for 1-3 days, depending on our needs. Committers
who attend the roundtable discussion will be allowed to attend the hackathon
for free. Non-committers, and committers who are *not* attending the
roundtable discussion, will need to fork out €100,00/day (to cover
food/drink costs).

Alexandra needs some information from us to help finalize some of these
details. First, for which day(s) do we need this? Are we hoping to have a
space for all three days of the conference, or just for that first
workshop/roundtable day?

Secondly, who among you us is planning to attend? Alexandra is ultimately
looking for me to provide her with two lists of folks: (1) committers
attending the roundtable, and (2) everyone else. She's already expecting
the following folks: Hyrum Wright, Stefan Sperling, Stephen Butler, Julian
Foad. (Also, a Dave Brown that I don't think I know, but who I suspect
Julian does.) I told her that Lieven and Bert are possibilities, too. Are
there others of you who are able to attend?

If there was ever a really good thing to use Subversion Corp's money
on, this would be it, IMO. -- justin

Having the room for all three days last year was quite useful. My
only concern is that I don't want to take advantage of their
generosity: I plan on doing a fair amount of hacking during SubConf,
but I also know that I'll be in-and-out for at least part of those
three days. The fact that others will be there means we'll probably
have several people using the room at any given point, so I'd go with
all three days.

As for Dave Brown, I also know him. He's actually submitted a few
JavaHL patches over the last month or so. I think our meeting should
be open to any developer (committer or not) who wants to come. Such
participation, if only in a passive way, is useful for increasing our
developer pool, which is never a bad thing. (These individuals would
of course need to cover the 100€/day fee required by the organizers.)

Yes. The more time we get, the better. +1 for having a room throughout
the entire event, if that's possible.

That's excellent. I'm coming, and last year I found it immensely
team-building and inspiring to be in a "community room" where we could
hang out, coding quietly or in pairs, asking the questions we are shy of
asking by email, discussing the current and the future.

Earlier I was thinking that maybe I'd not stay for the third day (just
because there's only one presentation in English then), but a
"hackathon" is more than enough reason to stay: it's more productive for
the long term than spending the same time working privately.

I remember we made an agenda last year and discussed things on it, and
that took up more than all of the first day. Then we broke informally
into smaller discussion groups afterwards. It felt frantic: so much to
do, so little time. It was good.
