I'm genuinely interested in this feature. The format being different from the local format is confusing for the end user (many of whom are unaware of this format difference).

It seems reasonable to me, I think... Let's just make sure there is sufficient test coverage that make sure we don't cause regressions on existing format parsing, and add flexibility with the new (presumably optional) input.

@rusackas
i have taken this up and completed the investigation and implementation for the date-formatting behavior
fix adds an optional display format to the native Time filter, reusing Superset’s existing D3 time-format infrastructure the underlying `time_range` value, parsing, serialization, and timezone semantics are left unchanged
i have also added regression coverage for the formatted range, human-readable ranges, infinity values, and UTC handling
i will open a PR shortly for review.

<!-- Answer -->
There isn’t a version of Superset (including up to 5.0.0rc1) where the date format for filter controls is user-configurable or follows the chart’s timestamp format setting. The filter UI still uses a hardcoded or locale-based date format, and there’s no built-in option to change this in any recent release. This limitation is confirmed by both the code and the changelogs—any workaround would require custom development or forking the filter plugin components.

Hey, here’s our suggestion for this feature. The ability to customize the display format for **Time range** filters is crucial for both readability and dashboard design consistency.
Currently, the default display format can not be changed and is static so it can clash with the presentation of the charts. Adding a **"Display Format String"** field to the filter's **Filter Settings** (as shown in the attached image) would solve this.
<img width="558" height="473" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/48bbc1c6-95d2-41d9-8060-f1577e472b16" />
**Proposed Technical Details:**
1. **New Field:** Use the drop-down selector from the charts customization options.
<img width="316" height="488" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/afbe8ad6-fbed-46e2-ae64-d166a53746d7" />
3. **Target Component:** The formatting logic would need to be applied in the component responsible for rendering the selected filter value in the **Filter Bar** on the side of the dashboard.
This change is purely presentational and wouldn't impact the underlying SQL query generation, making it a relatively isolated enhancement.

<!-- Greeting -->
Hi @praveer-rc! I'm [Dosu](https://go.dosu.dev/dosubot) and I’m helping the superset team.
<!-- Answer -->
This is a known limitation in Superset 4.0.2: the date format for filters is not configurable and does not use the chart's timestamp format setting. The filter UI does not expose a date format option, and the codebase confirms that filter plugins do not propagate or apply custom timestamp formats—date formatting is handled generically or via chart-level settings only.
If you need a specific timestamp format in your table/chart display, make sure no time grain is set, as time grains will truncate the timestamp and prevent full formatting from being applied. However, for filter controls themselves, there is currently no built-in way to change the date format—they will default to the standard format (typically `%Y-%m-%d`) regardless of your chart settings. This behavior is not patched or worked around in the current codebase, and any workaround would require custom development or forking the filter plugin components.
