Certainly you can run Tomcat on linux.

Normally, apache handles requests on port 80 and tomcat listens on 8080
(or similar). Then apache proxies requests for JSPs to tomcat:8080. The
client only ever sees apache on port 80. Why do you want tomcat on port
80? You can't have both on the same port...
