NB 14, 15 Platform Applications and Java 8 compatibility
I know NB 15 is still not released but I'm using rc1 it because 14 had an issue that made it unusable for me (forms designer frequently freezing).
After migrating from NB 12, the NB Platform's project 'Manage Platform' remained at Java 8.
I found that the produced NB Platform Application ran fine on Java 8. When no Java was found the application would say "Cannot find Java 1.8 or higher".
Does this mean that a NB Platform Application, compiled on NB 15 as described above, is compatible to run on Java 8? Or is this just luck that it ran on Java 8 and the error msg saying 1.8 is something that hasn't yet been updated?
Also, I found that after uninstalling Java 8 and having project's 'Manage Platform' now at Java 11 that the compiled Platform application would also run on Java 8.
I want to know whether to tell end users that they must move to J11+, or that J8 is still OK.

Thanks very much Neil & Michael for the clarification and the helpful options to consider. I now plan to bundle a JDK with the application and set myapp.conf jdkhome param to refer to it. Eventually I'll look into jlink to trim down the JDK although I'm a bit concerned about missing something since there are a lot of application modules, many obfuscated, plus all the jars that are part of the netbeans platform itself. I've seen some docs and demos on simpler java applications but none on a NB Platform Ant application. Hopefully it'll be basically a case of jdeps with a recursive flag to scan all jars. If you happen to know of any references that would be helpful for understanding jlink in the context of a NB Platform Ant application then that would be much appreciated.

And of course, https://github.com/apache/netbeans-tools/tree/master/nbpackage
jpackage is problematic for platform applications, which is why
nbpackage was written.
Best wishes,
Neil

it highly depends on what user base you have, but there is usually no
good reason to use anything else outside of the latest java LTS release.
You get the latest enhancements for free and use well supported software.
Also keep in mind that it is fairly unusual to have "java" installed on
an end user system. The time of webstart and applets is long over, JREs
technically don't exist anymore as well defined concept. Lets "code for
the lowest common denominator" is basically a practice from that time
when you hoped that the user had java installed but couldn't influence
which version it was.
Bundling a custom runtime (jlink) with the application might be also a
consideration.
There is also snap, flatpak, appimage, jpackage etc which might help there.
regarding NetBeans itself, over time, more and more tests will move from
JDK 8 to 11 or later. We can't test everything due to limited resources,
and it becomes more valuable to make sure everything works well on
modern java, than on JDK 8. As Neil mentioned, the IDE itself is only
fully supported on JDK 11, 17 and "current at release" since some
libraries ended their support of JDK 8 already, which means some modules
will only load on 11+.

At the moment the platform still supports running on Java 8, and most
of the modules in the whole IDE do too. A small number of modules in
the IDE require Java 11 or higher, so will not activate while running
on Java 8. The full IDE only officially supports Java 11 and above.
The NetBeans VSCode plugin is effectively a NetBeans platform
application that still supports Java 8.

The decision thread on the current state of play is at

There has been no decision to do anything further with regards
dropping Java 8 support as yet, but it will be communicated in
advance.
Best wishes,
Neil
