OT: PHP vs XML

What is everyone's opinion towards php over XML as a Server Side
application language? I'm learning php but wondering how it rates 'over'
XML. Is there a web site that explains the differences between the 2?

You are comparing wrong things here.

You are trying to ask something like,"Should I learn spanish or English"
but what you are really asking is ,"Should I learn english, or should i learn how to write english"

PHP is server side scripting language
XML is a Markup Language ( like HTML, HTML is more or less **not exactly** ) subset of XML.

Learn them both. XML can be used with PHP and more and more people are using it.

what do you plan to do? or you want to learn this, just to learn?


Alternative **not exactly** for php is JSP ( as or more powerful, but not as easy) , asp ( probably less powerful, M$, pretty much as easy as JSP ). 
Some Python scripting work is on the way too

you can always use mod_perl and do server side scripting in perl. PHP is very similar to perl, so if you know perl, PHP would be the way for u to go.
