Reg expiration cache

How do I check the cache-expiration functionality in Jetspeed. I have
kept my cache-expiration to 5 mins .my portlet is showing a graph
(report) from database. When I change the value in the database it is
reflected in the portlet. What cache-expiration is doing here and how
will I check the functionality.
