'Filesystem path is neither a file nor a directory' on svnadmin verify

We have a repository that has managed to get into a similar state as
described in:
http://svn.haxx.se/users/archive-2007-03/0805.shtml
and
http://svn.haxx.se/users/archive-2005-03/0327.shtml
- that is, strange errors on checkin, and an unverifiable/undumpable
repository with errors like "svnadmin: Filesystem path $SOMEPATH is
neither a file nor a directory".

There is just the one user on this repository, and he's not sure what's
happened to cause this - there are only 80 revisions in the repo. Losing
his code was much more of an issue than losing change history, so we did a
clean checkout and created a new repository using that clean version.

However, I'm wondering if anyone's aware of reasons that we would have
started seeing these errors. None of our other repositories have shown any
signs of problems, and all verify correctly.

We're using Subversion 1.4.2 from Debian, with BDB repositories.

Thanks,

David Adam
