Request for sharing ASF's "Way of Working"

Hi,
at my current employer we are trying to define the Way of Working.

The company is distributed across 3 major timezones, 4/5h aparts from each others.
We do have multiple projects and we are trying to define a model of ownership
to have lead developers or teams associated to them, responsible to maintain their repos.

I really would like to know more about the Apache Software Foundation model,
it would be great if you could share more about its internal way of working.

Specially about use cases of people that already attempted to introduce it in
corporation environments, and the success (or failures) of those attempts.

Regards,
Guido Serra aka Zeph, FSFE Fellow

Along with the other excellent advice on this thread, you should read up
on the InnerSource movement. That's a work in progress about
documenting the productive ways to introduce good FOSS and Apache ways
of working into a corporate environment.

There are a lot of companies trying to do exactly what you're trying to
do, and some smart people (including Apache folks) are trying to codify
the "InnerSource Way". It includes a lot of thought on how to encourage
corporate organizations to successfully use FOSS concepts of working.

There is a book that featured the ASF as a case study when talking
about distributed, 'leaderless' organizations. You might find that
helpful.

Hi Guido, thanks for your note.

Can you tell us more about why things aren't working so far?

Hi Guido,

that’s an interesting question and I am also interested to read a paper or the like.

Keep in mind, that the ASF itself is a foundation consisting of 200+ open source projects. The way each project is organised (driven by it’s PMC with the community) is different. So I expect that the ASF could give an overview of how the foundation is organised. If this “way of working” is applicable for organisational conditions in a company should be examined more deeply. But still - that’s really an interesting comparison.

All the best

Andy

Hi Guido,

Great to see you here after our discussion at the achnee Meetup earlier this week in Berlin.

One link I think is missing from the wealth of resources shared already is Shane's page on the Apache way: http://theapacheway.com/

There are a number of blog posts and interviews around, here's a
semi-random collection of links (including a few shameless plugs as
along with others ASF folks I've been doing lots of talks about this):
