Connectors (adapters ?) are "new" in tomcat, and we tried to keep
everything
working while doing some big changes.

Jamed Todd added the support for connectors in Startup and in XML, but
it's not used yet.

HttpServer has a big and ugly hack - when you start the server, it will
look for a "connector.properties" file and if found, will look for a
property
named "connector.HOST.PORT.class" ( where HOST and PORT are
the constructor params).

If this property is found, that class will be used as a constructor, and
all "connector.HOST.PORT.x=y" will be passed as parameters to it
( set port, etc).

I know it's a very bad design - but it was the easiest way to have
everything
working without asking everyone to rewrite all code ( that happened before
we released the code - we obviously wanted to have some code that was
"proved" and tested)

I will clean everything very soon - the right way to do it is via a normal
API.

It's on my list, but I want to finish with RequestAdapter interface first.

Please do the changes you need, and let me know if you need any help.

Yes.

i'd like to add that our small team has been walking
two tracks as of late, one being jakarta and the other
being j2ee. as such, we've had to make some design
concessions all of which i'm confident we collectively
can address at the right time. i'm sure this approach
is not new to anyone who's designed/developed/deployed
an application of measurable size.

we're just about done with the final j2ee integration
after which we should be able to shift back to and
address tomcat internals. that said, i encourage folks
to keep discussing and resolving any/all issues. further,
i hope to get the "tomcat config tool" discussion/proto/etc
rolling again as much of necessary plumbing is available
in tomcat (ie context.shutdown(), rmi admin port) and this
is a great opportunity to use/showcase jsp/servlet/xml/java
with a practical application.

hope this helps,

- james
