[users@httpd] Apache dies unexpectedly

Hey list,

For the past few days I have been having terrible problems with my
Apache 2 server.

Problem:
Apache dies unexpected and out of the blue. e.g. I came to work this
(monday) morning,
and found my webserver died about half an hour before I even got into
the office.
Every so often (seemingly random times...) therewill be entries in the
error_log saying:
[notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
[notice] Apache/2.0.54 (Unix) PHP/4.3.11 configured -- resuming normal
operations

Up until the point it dies (just said "caugh SIGTERM' nothing else),
this is what keeps happening.

So I changed the LogLevel to debug, and have been monitoring it
closely today, and the only thing
I see just before the server dies is a "removed PID file" message.

If anyone can help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated, as
my only option will
be to wipe apache and start with a fresh server (not very keen on
doing that...).

Please find some extra info below....

Info:
 PHP Version: 4.3.11
OS: Fedora Core 2 (Linux 2.6.5-1.358)
 Apache Details:
 [root@jack logs]# ../bin/apachectl -V
 Server version: Apache/2.0.54
 Server built: Apr 18 2005 14:28:22
 Server's Module Magic Number: 20020903:9
 Architecture: 32-bit
 Server compiled with....
  -D APACHE_MPM_DIR="server/mpm/prefork"
  -D APR_HAS_SENDFILE
  -D APR_HAS_MMAP
  -D APR_HAVE_IPV6 (IPv4-mapped addresses enabled)
  -D APR_USE_SYSVSEM_SERIALIZE
  -D APR_USE_PTHREAD_SERIALIZE
  -D SINGLE_LISTEN_UNSERIALIZED_ACCEPT
  -D APR_HAS_OTHER_CHILD
  -D AP_HAVE_RELIABLE_PIPED_LOGS
  -D HTTPD_ROOT="/usr/local/apache2"
  -D SUEXEC_BIN="/usr/local/apache2/bin/suexec"
  -D DEFAULT_PIDLOG="logs/httpd.pid"
  -D DEFAULT_SCOREBOARD="logs/apache_runtime_status"
  -D DEFAULT_LOCKFILE="logs/accept.lock"
  -D DEFAULT_ERRORLOG="logs/error_log"
  -D AP_TYPES_CONFIG_FILE="conf/mime.types"
  -D SERVER_CONFIG_FILE="conf/httpd.conf"

Tail of error log:

[root@jack logs]# cat error_log
[Mon Jun 27 12:57:50 2005] [info] removed PID file
/usr/local/apache2/logs/httpd.pid (pid=8618)
[Mon Jun 27 12:57:50 2005] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
[Mon Jun 27 12:58:21 2005] [notice] Apache/2.0.54 (Unix) PHP/4.3.11
configured -- resuming normal operations
[Mon Jun 27 12:58:21 2005] [info] Server built: Apr 18 2005 14:28:22
[Mon Jun 27 12:58:21 2005] [debug] prefork.c(956): AcceptMutex:
sysvsem (default: sysvsem)
[Mon Jun 27 12:58:26 2005] [info] removed PID file
/usr/local/apache2/logs/httpd.pid (pid=8666)
[Mon Jun 27 12:58:26 2005] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down

Mind you - nothing was being done on the server (well, the server is
in fact my workstation, alas, the webserver was not in use at the time
when the errors were logged).

This has been happening for almost 4 or 5 days now, and for no apparent reason.

If you wish to email me directly at aussiejohn[at]gmail[dot]com feel free to.

Cheerz,

John V.
