Git branch deletion no longer possible?

Hi all

Getting the following error when trying to delete a stale branch:

..> git push origin :add-test-retry
Password for 'https://andrewp@git-wip-us.apache.org':
remote: error: denying ref deletion for refs/heads/add-test-retry
To https://andrewp@git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf/jclouds.git
! [remote rejected] add-test-retry (deletion prohibited)

Are some new permissions needed for this (I know there have been some
changes to ASF's Git setup recently)? Do other committers get the same
error? If so, does anyone know what the correct process would be at this
point to remove that branch? Open an INFRA ticket?

Thanks!

ap

Hi Antonio,

Thanks for your interest in jclouds.

I guess ONE stands for OpenNebula.
Let me try to give you a little context about jclouds philosophy: although
each cloud provider offers (very often) multiple SDKs to consume their
APIs, jclouds tends to re-implement them to minimize the footprint of the
library and to maximize the usage of all the client strategies
(authentication, error handling, retrier, pagination and so on) offered by
jclouds core, so you should avoid a third-party 'client library' as much as
possible.
It worths notice also that the compute APIs are organized in 'api' and
'providers' (see website for more details)

Back to ONE, I think it exposes EC2-query based API and OCCI API.

I think you have 2 main alternative options:
- add a new opennebula provider based on the ec2 api.
- add occi api support and the opennebula provider based on those occi api.

I think jclouds doesn't have a step-by-step documentation to write a new
api/provider, sorry. Feel free to jump on IRC channel #jclouds on freenode
or continue here on the ML for any further questions.

HTH,
Andrea

Using existing SDKs from jclouds has ben discussed several times, but
as Andrea said, that is not the right way to implement a provider. It
could be a valid and fast approach, but it comes at a price that we'll
pay when having to keep the code as much unified as possible with
other providers and apis, and to maintain the code when issues appear
in the libraries the provider relies on.

It is nor an arbitrary choice we've made; you can read more details
about the reasoning behind this approach in the discussion we had
regarding this topic for the initial contributions the Azure provider:

Hi Antonio,

When I started writing the jclouds API for ProfitBricks, I mostly referred
to other existing project in the labs - specifically those from DigitalOcean
<https://github.com/jclouds/jclouds-labs/tree/master/digitalocean2> and
Docker <https://github.com/jclouds/jclouds-labs/tree/master/docker>, then
keeping in mind the guidelines described in the wiki
<https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/JCLOUDS/Creating+a+New+API+or+Provider>
(e.g.: practices, conventions, requirements).

Tip: Make sure your first PR, is simple and small. Last year, I sent my
first PR <https://github.com/jclouds/jclouds-labs/pull/72> which had tons
of code, but had a hard time getting it merged. Implement APIs one-by-one,
and throughout the review process you'll get the hang of how jclouds works.
The community is awesome; You can reach us via IRC
<http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#jclouds>. :)

Cheers,
RJ

Hi,
We use a Java library to interact with ONE. We need to know how jClouds should interact with our Java library. Which class we should extend or interface to implement and so on...
Thank you a lot

Ah, cool! What kind of a backend system are you planning to talk to? Is
it exposed via an HTTP API (if so, XML or JSON), or do you have a Java
or other library to talk to it, or..?

Can you give us some more details on what kind of an API you are trying
to write? Is it a compute service, a blobstore, something else?

Thanks for confirming, Ignasi. I've created
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-10965 for this.

Yes. Non-fast-forward pushes and branch deletion has been disabled
temporary in all ASF repos until a proper Git policy regarding the
topic is established foundation-wide. If you really need to delete the
branch, I'm pretty sure reaching infra on irc, hipchat or a jira issue
will help.
