virtual hosts in Apache and Tomcat conf files

What is the difference between specifying VirtualHost in apache conf 
file vs. Host element in Tomcat server.xml file?

Does this depend on the connector used?  Would using Host elements in 
server.xml remove dependency on what connector is used?
