Bitflux fails to load

I've created a Lenya site locally using the Jetty server, then deployed
Lenya into Tomcat and copied over the new publication I've created.
All's well mostly, but when I try to open BXE I just get a blank page
and a javascript error. Here's the returned XHTML;

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE xhtml:html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<xhtml:html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"
xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><xhtml:head><xhtml:meta
content="xhtml=http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" name="bxeNS" /><xhtml:meta
content="lenya=http://apache.org/cocoon/lenya/page-envelope/1.0"
name="bxeNS" /><xhtml:meta content="dc=http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"
name="bxeNS" /><xhtml:meta content="dcterms=http://purl.org/dc/terms/"
name="bxeNS" />

<!-- Namespaces are doctype specific and will be added during
aggregation -->

<xhtml:link rel="stylesheet" href="/lenya/bxeng/css/editor.css"
type="text/css" />
<!-- href="/bxeng/css/editor.css" -->

<xhtml:script src="/lenya/bxeng/bxeLoader.js" type="text/javascript" />
<!-- src="/bxeng/bxeLoader.js" -->

<title
xmlns="">/lenya/WFBT-CMS/authoring/theconcept.html?lenya.usecase=bxeng&amp;lenya.step=config</title>

</head><body
onload="bxe_start('/lenya/WFBT-CMS/authoring/theconcept.html?lenya.usecase=bxeng&amp;lenya.step=config')">
<!-- everything in the following div element will be replaced -->
<div id="bxe_area">
<noscript>
<span style="font-family: Arial; padding: 5px; background-color: #ffffff">
You need JavaScript enabled. Otherwise nothing at all works here
:)</span></noscript>
</div>

<!-- another way to do it without having to use xslt
   <div id="foobar" bxe_xpath="/xhtml:body"></div>
-->
</body></html>

The error is "bxe_start is not defined" (I'm using Firefox 1.0.2). Lenya
is deployed under the context "lenya" in Tomcat (5.0.25) so the links to
the javascript files look ok (e.g. I can browse to
{myserver}/lenya/bxeng/bxeLoader.js and I see the javascript, including
the bxe_start function). Has anyone else had this? Any ideas on tracking
down the problem?

Well, at least there's a "real-life" fix (i.e. don't install Firefox
1.0.3 !). Over to the Firfox guys.....

Ok, saw it now.

The cause of the problem is described here:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=290777

So, blame firefox' QA team ;)

There's a "solution" described there, but I'm not sure if i'm gonna
apply that. I have tons of prototype.__defineGetter__s in BXE...

If I'd only know, when they release 1.0.4..

Grrr, I can confirm that... Will have a look.

Thank you for this link! I'm just using Tomcat running on port 80, so
there's no proxying going on - but this sorted out the problem.
I have, however, found another problem which I've put into the bug
tracking system as it's difficult to verify exactly. Bitflux appears to
be broken in Firefox 1.0.3 (ok in 1.0.1);

http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=34522

I've posted a bug on the Bitflux site as well.

Thanks for everyone's help.

are you using mod_proxy? there was a fix after lenya 1.2.2 to fix some
issues with bxe, tomcat and mod_proxy:

One thing you could try is to look at the request going over the
network. When you save in Bitflux, your browser sends a PUT request to
your server, so you could take a look at what is going over the wire
- what is being sent
- what the server is answering

You can also try debugging the sitemap which integrates the BXE,
usecase-bxeng.xmap
The section "configuration" says what happens when BXE is started
(configured), the section marked as GET says how the document contents
are retrieved, and the PUT how they are stored.

All done manually - and it's my main production server, so I'm sure
Tomcat is ok. Jira is running in it, amongst other things.

Yes, all the same.

Yes again - no errors in there (or in the Cocoon logs)

Exactly - that's what's baffling me. Using Kupu (which I don't like too
much) or the form based editors is fine, and submitting for review and
publishing is also ok. I feel like I'm going mad here!

Dave,
I'm afraid I don't know exactly what problem you're having; but some ideas:

- how is tomcat on your server installed ? An rpm or something you
unpacked yourself ? If it's an rpm, I recommend you download a Tomcat
yourself and see if it works better
- did you make sure you copied the same endorsed libraries on your
server as on your machine ?
- did you check the Tomcat error logs ?

What baffles me is that Bitflux would not work but all other features
would. Can you do things like publish as well ?

Good luck,
Wolfgang

OK, sorry to keep pestering. This is a nasty problem now. I have setup
the same version of Tomcat on my machine and literally copied the Lenya
application from webapps on the server to webapps on my machine. Same
versions of Tomcat, Java, and all the files under the "lenya" context in
webapps are identical on both machines. The difference is that the
server is Red Hat Linux (8) and my machine is windows XP. It works
perfectly on my machine (exact copy, remember) but not from the server.
Can someone point me in the right direction to follow through the
requests/pipelines/etc. when loading up a document in Bitflux. I've
tried to follow the various sitemaps but I usually end up lost! There's
no ERRORs coming up in the log when I switch to DEBUG. Given that the
only difference seems to be the operating system, can anyone make a
guess as to where the problem might be. All other parts of the system
work ok (including Kupu and the form editors).
