Hello and Where To Start

Hi,

I am looking to get started, I have another friend who
would like to get started as a committer as well. We
have contributed to some other open source projects
but would like to get started on Geronimo. We became
very interested with the project after a couple
presentations at JavaOne.

I was thinking that we could start off by doing some
of the following:

- - get petstore working

- - harvest good material from website for better docs

- - user documentation

- - MDB example

- - SLSB/SFSB example

- - EB example

- - JASS example

- - TX example

- - migration HOW-TO

- - reference docs : list of every configuration
option and what it

Just to get familiar.

Are there any of these todos currently under work by
anyone?

Jason

Hi Jason,

PetStore is almost working. Take a look at
http://wiki.apache.org/geronimo/PetStore and
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-271 where you can find out
what exactly an issue makes the 'almost' appear in my first sentence :)

Usually this kind of problem is caused by using a maven version other
than 1.0.2. If you are using 1.0.2, we'll have to look further: one
possibility is that you have a build.properties file in your home
directory that is overriding the correct maven settings.

Build Issue

Posted by Jason Lenhart <jp...@yahoo.com>.
Hello,

Just getting started here and I am off to a not so
productive beginning.

I am trying to build the source:

First tried maven m:rebuild-all

Then tried maven maven m:rebuild -o

Then tried maven m:build

All fail for the following reason:

BUILD FAILED
File.......
/Users/jasonlenhart/.maven/cache/maven-multiproject-plugin-1.3.1/plugin.jelly
Element... maven:reactor
Line...... 217
Column ......9
Unable to obtain goal[default] --
/Users/jasonlenhart/Development/Downloads/geronimo/modules/assembly/maven.xml:344:15
<bootstrap:bootstrap>
org.apache.kernel.repository.MissingDependencyException:
uri tmporb/jars/tmporb-orb-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar not found
in repository

Obviously missing a jar ... what is the easiest way to
tell maven to go out and grab it?

Thanks,

Jason

Sing Li contributed a couple of small example apps and I'm working on
getting these running so that they can be checked in.

Jason,

I think these two tasks would be best help get you acquainted with
the Geronimo codebase. Once you write a few sample apps, I think it
will be obvious what needs the most work :)

If you need any help, most of the committers hang out on IRC all day

Hello,

Thank you for the replies. Couple options I have
outlined:

-Write a simple application (with a host of
settings)and document migration steps from JBoss to
Geronimo ...

-Write an app and cover both J2EE concepts and
deployment descr. and Geronimo concepts and deployment
within the context of Geronimo

-My buddy and I dive right into the Work Manager API,
makes me nervous:-D Although both my friend and I
used to work for an App server company I never worked
within the context of concurrency operations.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Jason

	Well, I'm working on documentation
(http://chariotsolutions.com/geronimo/), but it's not really of the HOWTO
style, and (at least in the near term), I'm not planning to address
migration. So on the documentation front, I think migration and some full
HOWTOs covering both J2EE concepts and deployment descriptors and Geronimo
concepts and deployment plans would be great.

There's been work done on the petstore, which is in the Geronimo
source repository as sandbox/petstore. I'm not sure it's actually fully
working, and if not, your help would certainly be appreciated.

Someone mentioned earlier that they had example apps, but I don't
think those examples made it into the source tree. They shoud, though, so
on the example front I would plan on finding out what's already available
and plan to add to it.

Still catching up on email after vacation but the last I recall here
(from July/early Aug) was that someone was going to post a strawman.

Seems like there's been nothing done yet. Ping Rahul, and go from
there.

What's the status of the work manager API?

I get the impression that there's been no development
of this framework?

I have an email from Rahul Tyagi on June 28th and
haven't seen much active discussion on this topic
since then. Yesterday there was some discussion going
back and forth regarding thread pools vs. work
manager, but this was not a discussion re: the
implementation of the work manager api.

This could be a good place to start if the task still
needs to be completed.

Any thoughts?
