Summary: htaccess files with names, instead of IPs, do not work
Product: Apache httpd-2
Version: 2.2.6
Platform: Sun
OS/Version: Solaris
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: mod_auth
AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
ReportedBy: wjs@cs.duke.edu
CC: wjs@cs.duke.edu
After upgrading to the latest release (2.2.6) of httpd, .htaccess files with
names no longer work. No error is generated, and the files seem to work fine
with IP addresses, just not DNS names. The error message records:
[Thu Nov 01 09:27:40 2007] [error] [client [IP deleted]] client denied by
server configuration:
If the DNS name is switched to an IP address all works as expected. It appears
that the DNS name is not causing a lookup and failing. Even if HostnameLookups
are enabled globally it still seems to fail.

This bug turned out to be related to Solaris's nscd. It is still an odd bug
since other network services seem to work, but just not apache. I am following
up with a bug report to Sun.

You don't appear to be able, at least we don't, use any names at all either
domain names .example.com or fqdn www.example.com

Here is a little more information. This bug only seems to appear when you are
compiling all of the modules in. I have not figured out which interaction
causes it, but..

Just clarifying; you're saying that when utilizing a .htaccess file that you can
no longer use FQDN's?
