Re: Please respond: Open Meetings Use Cases Survey

Posted by Daniel Ascher <da...@aplustutoring.com>.
Hi George (and the rest of the user group):

George: Thanks so much for your feedback. I think you make some great
suggestions, both in terms of the survey itself, and features issues.

Up to this point I have a total of 12 responses (plus yours, which is not
yet added to the survey). I would really like to get a larger number of
responses in order to make this more meaningful. Maybe you and others can
forward the survey to some of your end users?

I would be happy to create a more detailed follow-up survey if the response
we get from this one is helpful to the community. However I think that
right now, given that the response rate is low, it would be best to
continue with what we have first, and then consider next steps with it.

Also, FYI--since I am not a programmer/developer, I don't have an
understanding of the process by which suggested improvements are approved
or implemented. That might be helpful to know about if we do a more
extensive survey next time around.

Best.

Dan

RE: Please respond: Open Meetings Use Cases Survey

Posted by George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>.
Daniel,

I have given my thoughts for both additions to the survey and what would be my responses to the survey.

By the way, you forgot to include survey questions for other features such as the SIP dialler, SIP Exchange connection, Email Client, Dashboard, Chat window, Meeting room Chat area, Calendar feature, all the Administration sections/menus/features.

The Calendar feature which if it was free from bugs would be excellent and attendees don’t have to log in, they just select a link.

Administration section could be improved by adding a “search” feature to all the sections.

While it seems good, I have no use for the Email client so I wonder why it is there?

I can find no purpose for the Dashboard, and would prefer people to log straight into the meeting rooms selection tabs, with the ability to have users log into their “groups” or “Companies” “Private rooms” when they first log in. Chat window/tab should be another tab on the right of all the Rooms tabs. (I am getting away from the survey).

I also suggest a rating system, e.g. (Ratings: 1 being the most important and 10 being the least, 0 being not required or of no importance to you)

RE: 5 second "Start recording test" does not play back and cannot play meeting room screen recordings

Posted by George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>.
Tom,

I believe “ant clean.all”, is a fix for the issue we were both experiencing. If this is true and you had been using the binaries of the Jenkins nightly builds from https://builds.apache.org/job/openmeetings/, then I would have to believe that this build process must also be missing the “ant clean.all”, or that you had downloaded your copy of the build before the original fix was added (?).

As this worked for me, I would suggest that you install ANT and then follow the steps that I did to build OpenMeetings.

I use to create a clean build of OpenMeetings (please let me know if I am missing any other steps). The steps show some of the output of the various commands.

Thanks, and as you said, running “ant clean.all” before the “ant -Ddb=mysql” has resolved the issue of playing back recordings.

	oops,

I have posted the reference to the wrong file in the SVN.
As you should be using the 2.0 branch this file would be the correct reference:
	https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/branches/2.0/build.properties

	Sebastian

	2012/7/9 seba.wagner@gmail.com <se...@gmail.com>

	you need to run
	ant clean.all
if you want to change the red5 revision in the build and force the script to freshly checkout the red5 components.

	Sebastian

	2012/7/9 seba.wagner@gmail.com <se...@gmail.com>

Actually the build file is configured to use 4385
		http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/tags/2.0RC3/build.properties

You might try to change those properties to use 4388, however it might require some further changes not only the change of the revision number of red5.

		Sebastian,

Since I checked out the OpenMeetings 2.0 source today, so I would have expected that I had the most recent version, which agrees with the revision shown below from /usr/lib/red5/log/red5.log, however it would seem that the red5 issue has not been fixed as yet as I am still experiencing this issue (and also the ‘5 second “Start recording test” does not play back’ issue)? Or is there a later revision of the red5 server than Rev: 4380 ? If so, then maybe the OM 2.0 trunk is still picking up an older version (that is if Rev: 4380 is the older version) as I am still experiencing these issues.

		2012-07-09 14:45:21,161 [main] INFO org.red5.server.Launcher - Red5 Server 1.0.0 RC3 $Rev: 4380 $ (http://code.google.com/p/red5/)

As stated above, I also find that the 5 second “Start recording test” does not play back. It actually worked once, the first time, but since then it does not play back the 5 second video/audio recording. Now I only see the video while it is being recorded, but not on play back. I have attached log files, created just after I press the play button after recording the 5 second “Start recording test”. I am guessing that these two are related issues. Is there any way these problems can be solved?

		Thanks,

		Hi George,

indeed the problem you describe should have been already solved.
It is a red5 related issue not OpenMeetings. However it should be already solved.

When you do startup your red5 service what red5 revision is printed in your console log?
There should be something like this around Line 100 of jvmstd.out (file produced when you start using red5-highperf.sh):
		Red5 Server 1.0.0 RC3 $Rev: 4380 $ (http://code.google.com/p/red5/)

		2012/7/9 George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>

		Sebastian,

I have checked out 2.0 and compiled and then installed on a Debian 32 bit server.

		svn checkout http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/branches/2.0/

		root@OpenMeetings:/usr/adm/om20/2.0# <mailto:root@OpenMeetings:/usr/adm/om20/2.0> /usr/adm/apache-ant-1.8.4/bin/ant -Ddb=mysql

When I record a conference meeting and then try to play it back, I only get a black screen (maybe it is still rendering in the background?). If I move to a new menu item, I get a black “video window” in the “front” everything else that should be on the screen. I have inserted an screen shot to show you what it looks like. Can other people reproduce this issue, or am I the only one? If I download the AVI or the FLV file, VLC player plays the recorded video quite well, just I am unable to view it by the “Recordings” menu option in OpenMeetings.

I will do other tests when I get the chance. As for a previous issue that I had, I have tested invitations and screen sharing in a Calendar Event meeting and this has worked well for me.

/usr/lib/red5/openmeetings.log for when I select the video. There are not log entries for when I select “play” to play the selected video.

		Hi George,

you are right there are recently a number of changes committed, however trunk is now version 2.1.
I've set up a new SVN branch:
		http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/branches/2.0/

This is based on RC3 + contains only bug fixes of trunk (but not any new features).
This branch is the 2.0 tree that is likely to be released. We will continue to fix only Bugfixes here.
I would invite you to test this ... I tried to set up a new Jenkins build job:
		https://builds.apache.org/job/Openmeetings%202.0/
but unfortunately Apache's Build Infrastructure seems to be currently buggy, so there that is no build ready yet. But there should be one maybe tomorrow morning.

If you see any bugs or issue in that branch please report it to our list and we will try to fix it asap to have it in our release candidate.

		About some test - scenarios:
There have been attempts in the past to have such a list of standard tests:
		http://code.google.com/p/openmeetings/wiki/QualityAssurance
And for the recording features a more detailed one:
		https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OPENMEETINGS/WebStart+Application+for+Screensharing+and+Recording

Feel free to extend the "QualityAssurance" paper with more tests. I think one major task before we do start to write down those tests we would need to find a consens on a person responsible for the tests. Or maybe we even call it "Quality assurance executive" :)
You think you would like to be that person?

		Sebastian,

I quite often find that when I download OpenMeetings 2.0 latest revision, there is something that was working before but is now broken. I understand that we are doing a lot of updates and changes but some stability would be greatly appreciated by those of us who are using/testing OpenMeetings 2.0 in production.

		Is the following suggestion possible?

		1) Use svn to get the latest copy of OpenMeetings which has everyone’s change being applied to it.

		2) Use https://builds.apache.org/job/openmeetings/ (i.e. Jenkins) for getting a copy of OpenMeetings that has pasted a set of basic testing.

		3) Have a set of basic tests documented so that OpenMeetings can be tested against this set of tests before it is loaded into Jenkins ? OpenMeetings could be uploaded to Jenkins on a monthly basis? More frequently if people have time to go though the tests.

Maybe there are other ways to manage rapid development and a stable version every so often which has been though some form of complete feature testing?

		Thanks,

		George Kirkham

RE: 5 second "Start recording test" does not play back and cannot play meeting room screen recordings

Sebastian,

Thanks, and as you said, running "ant clean.all" before the "ant
-Ddb=mysql" has resolved the issue of playing back recordings.

If anyone is interested, below are the steps that I use to create a
clean build of OpenMeetings (please let me know if I am missing any
other steps).

# rm -rf 2.0

oops,

I have posted the reference to the wrong file in the SVN.

number of red5.

	Sebastian,

Since I checked out the OpenMeetings 2.0 source today, so I
would have expected that I had the most recent version, which agrees
with the revision shown below from /usr/lib/red5/log/red5.log, however
it would seem that the red5 issue has not been fixed as yet as I am
still experiencing this issue (and also the '5 second "Start recording
test" does not play back' issue)? Or is there a later revision of the
red5 server than Rev: 4380 ? If so, then maybe the OM 2.0 trunk is still
picking up an older version (that is if Rev: 4380 is the older version)
as I am still experiencing these issues.

As stated above, I also find that the 5 second "Start recording
test" does not play back. It actually worked once, the first time, but
since then it does not play back the 5 second video/audio recording. Now
I only see the video while it is being recorded, but not on play back. I
have attached log files, created just after I press the play button
after recording the 5 second "Start recording test". I am guessing that
these two are related issues. Is there any way these problems can be
solved?

When I record a conference meeting and then try to play it back,
I only get a black screen (maybe it is still rendering in the

have inserted an screen shot to show you what it looks like. Can other
people reproduce this issue, or am I the only one? If I download the AVI
or the FLV file, VLC player plays the recorded video quite well, just I
am unable to view it by the "Recordings" menu option in OpenMeetings.

I will do other tests when I get the chance. As for a previous
issue that I had, I have tested invitations and screen sharing in a
Calendar Event meeting and this has worked well for me.

	Hi George,

you are right there are recently a number of changes committed,
however trunk is now version 2.1.
I've set up a new SVN branch:

http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/branches/2.0/

This is based on RC3 + contains only bug fixes of trunk (but not
any new features).
This branch is the 2.0 tree that is likely to be released. We
will continue to fix only Bugfixes here.
I would invite you to test this ... I tried to set up a new
Jenkins build job:
	https://builds.apache.org/job/Openmeetings%202.0/
but unfortunately Apache's Build Infrastructure seems to be
currently buggy, so there that is no build ready yet. But there should
be one maybe tomorrow morning.

If you see any bugs or issue in that branch please report it to
our list and we will try to fix it asap to have it in our release
candidate.

	About some test - scenarios:
There have been attempts in the past to have such a list of
standard tests:
	http://code.google.com/p/openmeetings/wiki/QualityAssurance
And for the recording features a more detailed one:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OPENMEETINGS/WebStart+Applic
ation+for+Screensharing+and+Recording

Feel free to extend the "QualityAssurance" paper with more
tests. I think one major task before we do start to write down those
tests we would need to find a consens on a person responsible for the
tests. Or maybe we even call it "Quality assurance executive" :)
You think you would like to be that person?

	Sebastian

	2012/7/8 George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>

	Sebastian,

I quite often find that when I download OpenMeetings 2.0 latest
revision, there is something that was working before but is now broken.
I understand that we are doing a lot of updates and changes but some
stability would be greatly appreciated by those of us who are
using/testing OpenMeetings 2.0 in production.

	Is the following suggestion possible?

	1) Use svn to get the latest copy of OpenMeetings which has
everyone's change being applied to it.

	2) Use https://builds.apache.org/job/openmeetings/ (i.e.
Jenkins) for getting a copy of OpenMeetings that has pasted a set of
basic testing.

	3) Have a set of basic tests documented so that
OpenMeetings can be tested against this set of tests before it is loaded
into Jenkins ? OpenMeetings could be uploaded to Jenkins on a monthly
basis? More frequently if people have time to go though the tests.

Maybe there are other ways to manage rapid development and a
stable version every so often which has been though some form of
complete feature testing?

	Thanks,

	George Kirkham

FW: Client issues after upgrade

Posted by George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>.
Oleg,

You asked "3. A few days ago we were recommended to take svn version

The best way that I can answer this for you is to quote Sebastian when

"you are right there are recently a number of changes committed, however

further detail of our conversations. While I would like to see
improvements made to the user interface, at this time my efforts are
focused to getting this 2.0 trunk/tree as stable as possible by
identifying any bugs are requesting fixes.

If you build from the above 2.0 trunk, I would be very interested to
know how your tests go. I have found it more stable, less issues than "
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/trunk/singleweba
pp/
<https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/trunk/singleweb
app/> " which you have been using. So far the greatest number of people
in a conference that we have had has been nine. It would be great to be
able to have 85 participants to be able to test with.

Do you ever have issues with people who cannot connect because their
firewall blocks the ports that OpenMeetings uses? I have one group of
people who we would like to conference with whose firewall blocks ports
5080, 1935 and 8088. Fortunately I have found away to change the ports
that Openmeetings uses.

Thanks,

George Kirkham

I think those red5 related issues should be solved then.

		Sebastian,

I have checked out 2.0 and compiled and then installed
on a Debian 32 bit server.

		svn checkout
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/branches/2.0/

		root@OpenMeetings:/usr/adm/om20/2.0#
<mailto:root@OpenMeetings:/usr/adm/om20/2.0>
/usr/adm/apache-ant-1.8.4/bin/ant -Ddb=mysql

When I record a conference meeting and then try to play
it back, I only get a black screen (maybe it is still rendering in the
background?). If I move to a new menu item, I get a black "video
window" in the "front" everything else that should be on the screen. I
have inserted an screen shot to show you what it looks like. Can other
people reproduce this issue, or am I the only one? If I download the AVI
or the FLV file, VLC player plays the recorded video quite well, just I
am unable to view it by the "Recordings" menu option in OpenMeetings.

I will do other tests when I get the chance. As for a
previous issue that I had, I have tested invitations and screen sharing
in a Calendar Event meeting and this has worked well for me.

/usr/lib/red5/openmeetings.log for when I select the
video. There are not log entries for when I select "play" to play the
selected video.

Subject: Re: OpenMeetings stability during this time of
rapid changes

		Hi George,

you are right there are recently a number of changes
committed, however trunk is now version 2.1.
I've set up a new SVN branch:

http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/branches/2.0/

This is based on RC3 + contains only bug fixes of trunk
(but not any new features).
This branch is the 2.0 tree that is likely to be
released. We will continue to fix only Bugfixes here.
I would invite you to test this ... I tried to set up a
new Jenkins build job:
		https://builds.apache.org/job/Openmeetings%202.0/
but unfortunately Apache's Build Infrastructure seems to
be currently buggy, so there that is no build ready yet. But there
should be one maybe tomorrow morning.

If you see any bugs or issue in that branch please
report it to our list and we will try to fix it asap to have it in our
release candidate.

		About some test - scenarios:
There have been attempts in the past to have such a list
of standard tests:

http://code.google.com/p/openmeetings/wiki/QualityAssurance
And for the recording features a more detailed one:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OPENMEETINGS/WebStart+Applic
ation+for+Screensharing+and+Recording

Feel free to extend the "QualityAssurance" paper with
more tests. I think one major task before we do start to write down
those tests we would need to find a consens on a person responsible for
the tests. Or maybe we even call it "Quality assurance executive" :)
You think you would like to be that person?

		Sebastian

		2012/7/8 George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>

		Sebastian,

I quite often find that when I download OpenMeetings 2.0
latest revision, there is something that was working before but is now
broken. I understand that we are doing a lot of updates and changes but
some stability would be greatly appreciated by those of us who are
using/testing OpenMeetings 2.0 in production.

		Is the following suggestion possible?

		1) Use svn to get the latest copy of OpenMeetings
which has everyone's change being applied to it.

		2) Use https://builds.apache.org/job/openmeetings/
(i.e. Jenkins) for getting a copy of OpenMeetings that has pasted a set
of basic testing.

		3) Have a set of basic tests documented so that
OpenMeetings can be tested against this set of tests before it is loaded
into Jenkins ? OpenMeetings could be uploaded to Jenkins on a monthly
basis? More frequently if people have time to go though the tests.

Maybe there are other ways to manage rapid development
and a stable version every so often which has been though some form of
complete feature testing?

		Thanks,

		George Kirkham

Re: 5 second "Start recording test" does not play back and cannot play meeting room screen recordings

Posted by "seba.wagner@gmail.com" <se...@gmail.com>.
Hi George,

please do an SVN update of the 2.0 branch and run:
ant clean.all
followed with
ant -Ddb=mysql dist

I think those red5 related issues should be solved then.

Re: 5 second "Start recording test" does not play back and cannot play meeting room screen recordings

oops,

I have posted the reference to the wrong file in the SVN.
As you should be using the 2.0 branch this file would be the correct
reference:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/branches/2.0/build.properties

Sebastian

Re: 5 second "Start recording test" does not play back and cannot play meeting room screen recordings

Posted by "seba.wagner@gmail.com" <se...@gmail.com>.
you need to run
ant clean.all
if you want to change the red5 revision in the build and force the script
to freshly checkout the red5 components.

Re: 5 second "Start recording test" does not play back and cannot play meeting room screen recordings

Posted by "seba.wagner@gmail.com" <se...@gmail.com>.
Actually the build file is configured to use 4385
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/tags/2.0RC3/build.properties

You might try to change those properties to use 4388, however it might
require some further changes not only the change of the revision number of
red5.

Re: OpenMeetings stability during this time of rapid changes

Posted by "seba.wagner@gmail.com" <se...@gmail.com>.
Hi George,

indeed the problem you describe should have been already solved.
It is a red5 related issue not OpenMeetings. However it should be already
solved.

When you do startup your red5 service what red5 revision is printed in your
console log?
There should be something like this around Line 100 of jvmstd.out (file
produced when you start using red5-highperf.sh):
Red5 Server 1.0.0 RC3 $Rev: 4380 $ (http://code.google.com/p/red5/)

RE: OpenMeetings stability during this time of rapid changes

Posted by George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>.
Sebastian,

I have checked out 2.0 and compiled and then installed on a Debian 32
bit server.

svn checkout
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/branches/2.0/

root@OpenMeetings:/usr/adm/om20/2.0# /usr/adm/apache-ant-1.8.4/bin/ant
-Ddb=mysql

When I record a conference meeting and then try to play it back, I only
get a black screen (maybe it is still rendering in the background?). If
I move to a new menu item, I get a black "video window" in the "front"
everything else that should be on the screen. I have inserted an screen
shot to show you what it looks like. Can other people reproduce this
issue, or am I the only one? If I download the AVI or the FLV file, VLC
player plays the recorded video quite well, just I am unable to view it
by the "Recordings" menu option in OpenMeetings.

I will do other tests when I get the chance. As for a previous issue
that I had, I have tested invitations and screen sharing in a Calendar
Event meeting and this has worked well for me.

/usr/lib/red5/openmeetings.log for when I select the video. There are
not log entries for when I select "play" to play the selected video.

I noticed that as you said, "I tried to set up a new Jenkins build job

Hi George,

you are right there are recently a number of changes committed, however
trunk is now version 2.1.
I've set up a new SVN branch:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openmeetings/branches/2.0/

This is based on RC3 + contains only bug fixes of trunk (but not any new
features).
This branch is the 2.0 tree that is likely to be released. We will
continue to fix only Bugfixes here.
I would invite you to test this ... I tried to set up a new Jenkins
build job:
https://builds.apache.org/job/Openmeetings%202.0/
but unfortunately Apache's Build Infrastructure seems to be currently
buggy, so there that is no build ready yet. But there should be one
maybe tomorrow morning.

If you see any bugs or issue in that branch please report it to our list
and we will try to fix it asap to have it in our release candidate.

About some test - scenarios:
There have been attempts in the past to have such a list of standard
tests:
http://code.google.com/p/openmeetings/wiki/QualityAssurance
And for the recording features a more detailed one:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OPENMEETINGS/WebStart+Applic
ation+for+Screensharing+and+Recording

Feel free to extend the "QualityAssurance" paper with more tests. I
think one major task before we do start to write down those tests we
would need to find a consens on a person responsible for the tests. Or
maybe we even call it "Quality assurance executive" :)

Jenkins)
for getting a copy of OpenMeetings that has pasted a set of basic
testing.

3) Have a set of basic tests documented so that OpenMeetings can be
tested against this set of tests before it is loaded into Jenkins ?
OpenMeetings could be uploaded to Jenkins on a monthly basis? More
frequently if people have time to go though the tests.

Maybe there are other ways to manage rapid development and a stable
version every so often which has been though some form of complete
feature testing?

Thanks,

George Kirkham

OpenMeetings stability during this time of rapid changes

Posted by George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>.

Hi George,

I am just a committer and PPMC with same rights then you so whatever is on
the agenda and finds a majority can be on the Roadmap.

I leave the other points open about the right landing page. I just think
the landing page for the user could be parameterized. From a project point
of view I just think that it would be good to have a place where we can
show news about the project or useful information for the user in general.

I think for the Chat we could think about a modification like that:
Make the Chat box a permanent UI element on the bottom that is minimized by
default but that does not change no matter where you go, as long as you do
not enter a concrete conference room. You can find the same on Google or
Facebook on the bottom with the chat.
I think that could be quite handy so that you can chat and interact with
other people right before you decide in which conference room you go.

Improvements to the User Interface

Posted by George Kirkham <gk...@co2crc.com.au>.
Sebastian,

I have been wanting to ask if people would be OK to discuss some restructuring to user interface.

While the Conference meeting room layouts are excellent, our users have plenty of problems logging in and joining a room, so I would like to suggest possible improvements.

Some of my suggestions for example;

1) The “Rooms” menu has one selection “Rooms”, which seems very pointless. Better if it had “Public Rooms”, “Private rooms”, “My Rooms”. Then the user could select to enter directly to a specific rooms type tab.

2) Personally I see no point to the “Dashboard” and would like this removed or become a selectable option.

3) I would like any user logging in, to go straight to their “Private rooms” tab from where they could select which room they wanted to enter. Most of our users only log in to join in a meeting for their Group (i.e. a private room)

4) The “Home” menu could have “Chat”, “Contacts and messages”, “My Profile”, “Recordings” and “Logout” as its options. “Contacts and messages” and “Profile” should be removed from the top right menu selections, but I don’t mind “Logout” and “Report a bug” staying there. If there is a use for the dashboard, then this could be a menu item of the “Home” menu as it is now, but not the first screen a user gets when they log in.

5) I have wondered if the Chat tab should be part of the rooms tabs, but since it is not a room type, then that does not make sense either.

Thanks,

George Kirkham

Re: Please respond: Open Meetings Use Cases Survey

Posted by Daniel Ascher <da...@aplustutoring.com>.
Hi Sebastian:

Thank you. I am glad I made the survey too. I could of course modify it if
necessary. I think it would be helpful if you can publicize it in any way
possible because the more users who respond, the more representative the
information will be.

My reason for creating the survey is that I am working with a development
team to set up a customized OM service which I hope to market to specific
professionals in my geographic area. I am doing a number of different types
of market research to determine which types of professionals are most
likely to use an online meeting service/web conference system.

I would also like to know which features are most important to users and
which aspects of the system that users are either unhappy with or would
like to add to their system.

So my personal reason for doing this is to hopefully develop a new line of
business which allows my company to provide a custom-tailored solution
specifically optimized for certain uses of OM.

However, I believe this kind of survey information could also be of value
to the larger OM community, and I will be happy to share my findings, as a
way of giving back to the community.

I hope this answers some of your questions. Please feel free to ask me for
more information or provide me with a list of additional questions.

Best.

Dan

Hi Dan,

glad you made it :)
I could try to post a new blog article about it.
That could gather some more attention to it.

But I would need some more background information about the survey to make
a nice article.
Dan, can you explain some of the reasons for the survey?

Thanks!
