maven no longer builds with jdk 1.3.1
The changelog plugin is missing the xerces reference needed to build
with jdk 1.3.x
The j2ee plugin is missing the xerces reference needed to build
with jdk 1.3.x
The linkcheck plugin is missing the xerces reference needed to build
with jdk 1.3.x
The release plugin is missing the xerces reference needed to build
with jdk 1.3.x
The word2html plugin is missing the xerces reference needed to build
with jdk 1.3.x
The xdoc plugin is missing the xerces reference needed to build
with jdk 1.3.x
If maven has happened to become "JDK 1.4 only" code, you might want to
state it somewhere on the web site.
Regards
Henning

Sounds like the test plugin was missing the xml dependency, not the
others. The test plugin needs xerces to produce xml output.

I know, but since it made no sense to me....

How do you run the bootstrap without the ant libraries on your classpath?
ant -f build-booststrap.xml
uses ant....

yes please.

Well, I don't know. After adding xerces and xml-apis to the
project.xml of the mentioned plugins I was able to bootstrap with
1.3.1. Before that, they would bomb out in the tests of the mentioned
plugins (aha!) every time.
I wouldn't write this here if I haven't experienced that.
I've seen your mail about being able to bootstrap with JDK 1.3.1 on
WinXP. Are you sure that you didn't have e.g. the ant libraries on
your classpath? Did you run all the plugin tests?
I can send you the error messages if you're interested.
