new Patch Manager needed (request for volunteer)

Sander Roobol, after doing a terrific job as Patch Manager for more
than a year, finally has to step down. He just got swamped with some
other committments.

Thank you for everything, Sander!

These will be tough shoes to fill. But I'm hoping someone will step
up: it's an important role, we have really grown to depend on the
Patch Manager to keep things organized.

Since we often see multiple volunteers when a call like this goes out
-- which warms the cockles of my heart, by the way -- let's give until
Thursday for responses to come in, before making any decision. It may
be that someone with particularly relevant skills or experience
volunteers. (It might also be that Patch Management is divisible,
though I tend to think that's less true of this role than of others.)

Below are:

   1. A description of the PM role that I just checked into HACKING,

   2. A list of pending patches that Sander Roobol sent me. This
list is a good place to start for whoever picks up the role.

Here's 1:

   The "Patch Manager" Role:
   -------------------------

Subversion usually has a Patch Manager, whose job is to watch the dev@
mailing list and make sure that no patches "slip through the cracks".

This means watching every thread containing "[PATCH]" mails, and
taking appropriate action based on the progress of the thread. If the
thread resolves on its own (because the patch gets committed, or
because there is consensus that the patch doesn't need to be applied,
or whatever) then no further action need be taken. But if the thread
fades out without any clear decision, then the patch needs to be saved
in the issue tracker, by filing a new issue of type 'PATCH',
summarizing the patch and the responses to it, and pointing to the
   relevant mailing list archive URLs.

The Patch Manager needs a basic technical understanding of Subversion,
and the ability to skim a thread and get a rough understanding of
whether consensus has been reached, and if so, of what kind. It does
*not* require actual Subversion development experience or commit
access. Expertise in using one's mail reading software is optional,
   but recommended :-).

This is an important role. Having outstanding patches organized in
the issue tracker makes them *much* more manageable; many changes are
in Subversion today because they were caught by the Patch Manager. We
currently do not have a Patch Manager. Sander Roobol, our first PM,
did a great job for a long time, but he got swamped with some other
stuff and had to step down. We are now seeking a new Patch Manager.
Please post to dev@subversion.tigris.org if you're interested.

Yeah, I think it's a good idea. Sander Roobol, the previous patch
manager, did it all the time, so people are accustomed to it. I
wouldn't worry too much about cluttering the list. These sorts of
message are small, discrete pieces of information whose implications
are easily understood, so in terms of "mental clutter" they're not a
problem, if you know what I mean.

Thank you for trusting me with the responsibility. I'm actually glad
that something like this was available, since I don't yet feel
comfortable contributing much code to Subversion, but I am quite eager
to do -something- to help out.

Yep, I actually already went through and found all the original patch
messages in the archives (what can I say, I had nothing better to do on
a Monday night). I will also post a message asking for those with
unhandled patches to let me know about them.

Thanks for the help, and I certainly expect to be asking some questions.
So here's my first question: when a thread has fizzled out without a
clear resolution, do you think it is a good idea to add a final response
to the thread saying that I am adding the issue to the issue tracker? I
think that would probably help for anyone searching the archives, and to
let the original poster know that something is happening. But I also
don't want to clutter the list with such messages, if you think that
would be overkill.

Thanks also, Max, for the pointers to those four threads. I'll take
those off the list.

Michael, you sound like exactly the right kind of person for it. A
"perfectionist who likes to make sure that details are taken care of
and loose ends are wrapped up." Yup, that's pretty much the job
description :-).

Thanks for volunteering!

No, there's no hazing process, except insofar as wading through that
backlog of unhandled patches I posted counts as a hazing (which is a
reasonable use of the term, I suppose). The list is huge, I realize,
so you might want to buy yourself some instant delegation by posting
to the dev@ list, saying you'll be doing patch management, and asking
individuals to either repost patches or (better yet) point you to mail
archiver threads about their unhandled patches. For any given pending
patch, there's probably *someone* out there who's still watching to
see if something happens with it, and that person would have a reason
to respond to your request.

Good luck! Don't hesitate to ask questions here. Patch management is
crucial to the project, we'll do everything we can to make it easier
for you...

I've been reading the Subversion lists for a few months now, and have
started getting familiar with the code and documentation. I love using
Subversion and would like to help out in any way I can. The role of
Patch Manager sounds like it would fit my current (fairly low) level of
expertise pretty well, and I am willing to volunteer for the job.
Besides, I'm the sort of perfectionist who likes to make sure that
details are taken care of and loose ends are wrapped up. My tedious
personality is practically begging me to volunteer.

I understand that I'm a relative newcomer and not particularly
well-known, but I take my responsibilities seriously and if you decide
to go with me as the new Patch Manager, I will do my very best.

Some details about me that may or may not be relevant:
- I read email religiously, using fetchmail/procmail/mutt.
- I work full-time, with flexible hours. Most of my free time is on
evenings and weekends, but I read email all day long.
- My programming background is mostly in C++ and Perl, though I am
comfortable with C and am picking up Ruby. I notice that a lot of
Subversion developers seem to be Python folks, but I don't hold that
against anyone. :-) I've actually been meaning to learn Python
anyway, and what better reason than to make a contribution?
- My personal homepage is http://mike.pietdepsi.com/. It's nothing
particularly stimulating, but has a few more details about me.

Feel free to grill me, or submit me to whatever hazing you deem
necessary. :-)
