Today I was unable to access any documents with open office. tried directly
opening Open office writer, no luck. Tried to uninstall, states I need to close
the program (it is not open). PDF files open fine, but certain docs are
labelled Open Document text and those don't open anymore? Thanks for any
guidance.

Are you sure that ODF files are associated with AOO program?
Anyway, you work with an obsolete version.
First, try to update with the last release 4.1.1.
For this kind of question, you are in wrong place here.
