Stopping to ask...
Folks,
Soon after I joined, I stopped to ask FirstBill about the Status list, and
all of the "Bill Stoddard is working on this" entries. He gave me gratis to
follow through on just about any of them.
That's where I am. I just looked at my list. I don't need all of this on
my personal plate, what with trying to get out the .msi installer for 1.3.17,
get one ready for 2.0b1 (we need the installer there too), and cleaning up
odds and ends I've left hanging around.
Three things, if we can do them, would be great for beta 1, if anyone wants
to stand up and attack them (sit back down Ryan :-)
1. Look for every APR_FINFO_ tag, especially APR_FINFO_NORM and APR_FINFO_[UGW]PROT
in apache/server and apache/modules and ask, "what do we actually use out of
this stat/lstat/getfileinfo/dir_read call?" Replace with specific, appropriate
tags. The hardest part of this is the r->finfo entry, which is a big list.
Then ask if we could live without it. If we can (the xbithack, for example),
don't specify the flag, but test (r->finfo.valid & APR_FINFO_GPROT) instead.
If it was free, we have our answer. If it cost buku cpu, we didn't try unless
we were told to.
2. Look at the multiviews logic and hack it to ask only the name. After we get the
name we like, then call stat for the r->finfo if we must, or leave it to the
core (I'm not certain without digging.)
3. Hack out the duplicity of stat calls from mod_rewrite. We probably need a
superset that handles the r-> record in general, that does the stat as needed.
I'm having trouble imagining why we would stat in so many different points of
the code. Similar for mod_dav_fs, but here we are doing alot better, I can see
the reasoning for most of them. Should be a simpler job, under item 1 above.
There is lots to do in Win32's stat to protect us from pipe names, device names,
etc, I can make more progress in a couple of days on those issues.
I'll have the installer finished asap, I was thrown alot more issues than today
than I budgeted for (not counting Apache list questions :-)
Bill

No worries there. I am re-architecting mod_status and friends this week.
