[VOTE] Apache Apex Malhar Release 3.5.0 (RC1)

Dear Community,

Please vote on the following Apache Apex Malhar 3.5.0 release candidate.

This is a source release with binary artifacts published to Maven.

This release is based on Apex Core 3.4 and comes with 61 resolved issues.

The release advances the high level stream API to support stateful
transformations with Beam style windowing semantics. The demo package has
examples for usage of the API. There are also important improvements to
underlying operator state management components, which are functional first
cut and will be enhanced in upcoming releases, such as WindowOperator,
spillable collections and incremental state saving.

The release also adds several new operators.

List of all issues fixed: https://s.apache.org/5vQi

We are removing the files, new test files can be added later. I will call
RC2 vote shortly.

Hi,

> I was told the content is intended for unrestricted redistribution.

Have all the authors agreed to that? Are all the authors employees of DT? Have they signed the equivalents to ICLAs for that content?

IMO (and again I’m not a lawyer) I think the content would need to be clearly licensed before it can be placed and redistribution in an Apache release.

Ask yourself how would DT feel if someone took that content, modified it and republished on their own blog?

> I also opened the JIRA to replace the content

Thanks for that.

> Can we address this issue for the next release (it has been around for a while already)?

IMO no and hence my -1 vote. However it’s up to the PMC as a whole to decide not me, a -1 vote is not a veto and all a vote need to pass is 3 +1 votes and more +1 votes than -1 votes. People can change their votes by voting again. That being said I should also point out that releases must comply with ASF policy - in this case see [1][2].

Thanks,
Justin

Justin,

I was told the content is intended for unrestricted redistribution. I have
forwarded this to the responsible person to possibly state this on the web
site. I also opened the JIRA to replace the content:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/APEXMALHAR-2216

Can we address this issue for the next release (it has been around for a
while already)?

The other items are being worked on for RC2.

Thanks

Hi,

How is that content licensed? I could find nothing at [1] all it states is "© 2015 DataTorrent” so that would mean your require permission form DataTorrent and they would need to be fine for people to redistribute it, modify it etc etc Ideally it would be Apache or at least an Apache compatible license.

Also having Data Torrent content in an Apache release seems a little odd, even if it only used for test data.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

INAL but it seems the license [1] does place some additional restrictions [2] on you that may mean it's not APv2 compatable. i.e. you are not automatically given the ability to redistribute all books, you can’t make changes to the content, if it charged for you need to pay royalties.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for the catch.

For the wordcount.txt file that contains content from Project Gutenberg, it
says:

This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with
almost no restrictions whatsoever. You may copy it, give it away or
re-use it under the terms of the Project Gutenberg License included
with this eBook or online at www.gutenberg.org

The clause "the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with almost no
restrictions whatsoever" made me think it was ASF license compatible,
although the word "almost" made it vague.

I will replace this with content that is certainly ASF license compatible
(e.g. content from apache.org web site) so it's not a big deal but this is
for future purposes.

Thanks again!

David

These files (7./8.) were already replaced when the issue first came up with
3.2.0, here is the diff:

https://github.com/apache/apex-malhar/commit/75dc74fe33740cd6d2e3432a4248d95333412648

Content is from DT blog site, do you see an issue with it?

Hi,

Sorry but -1 until license/copyright issues resolved.

I checked:
- signature and hashes good
- LICENSE and NOTICE good
- release contains content not compatible with Apache license (see below)
- no unexpected binary files
- all source files have ASF headers

I’m fairly sure that bundling this [1] is not allowed. Project Gutenberg is generally considered public domain but it not listed as an Apache compatible license here [3] and it is not an OSI approved license [4]. May be best to ask on legal discuss for clarification.

You may also want to replace the content of [2] with something else as it copyright Time magazine. (I thought this has been raised before?). These files [5][6][7] also look to have similar copyright issues.

Justin
