I tested this out on OpenOffice v.4.1.1 running on Windows Vista.

My general hardware specifications:
RAM: 5.00GB
AMD Quad-core processor, 2.2 GHZ
No SSD

I was able successfully replicate the specified problem, as the saving is
abnormally slow with larger documents. I was not able to successfully replicate
the text not appearing or disappearing while typing and saving simultaneously.
Below are the steps I took in simple testing:

Slow loading:
1. Open Writer, typing out multiple strings of text that fill page.
2. Copied this text, pasted it on the following page. Copy both pages.
3. Repeated 2 until file was quickly large and filled with text.
4. Ctrl - S, saved file. A 300 page file took around 6 seconds to save.

Text not appearing/disappearing:
- Same steps as above, but typing while doing number 4. The program freezes up,
but no text disappears.
