[Bug 121964] New: random unexpected error followed by recovery of one or many currently open spreadsheets

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121964

            Bug ID: 121964
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: random unexpected error followed by recovery of one or
                    many currently open spreadsheets
    Classification: Application
           Product: Calc
           Version: AOO 3.4.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows XP
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: editing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: gc1936@hotmail.com
                CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

Created attachment 80467
  --> https://issues.apache.org/ooo/attachment.cgi?id=80467&action=edit
daily rough budget

Calc suffers an unexpected error either on opening or later (or both) and goes
to file recovery. Recovered file always(?) seems to be up to date with changes
before made before crash but I check this with care. Only observed on
pre-existing files opened from desktop. I don't often create new ones. This
appears to be getting more common, now cannot expect to use a file without one
or more crashes. All these commonly used files are password protected, one has
been for several years, others only since about a month ago.
In addition, opening any of these files sometimes leads to a hung startup which
can be corrected by closing calc and reopening OO with no prior file identity.

I'm no expert, but it looks like Internet Explorer is the culprit.

Maybe Tools - Options... - OpenOffice.org - Online Update - Online Update
Options -> uncheck Check for updates automatically will help.

Dr Watson log - abbreviated

This Dr W immediately after an OO error occurring to sample file previously
supplied.
Original too long for 1000KB limit so have trimmed out a large chunk. Low end
should include last several instances.

I can see that Dr Watson is recording problems with IE but I don't know how/if
they produce related problems in OO. Any thoughts? I have tried switching off
auto update for Windows but it has zero effect.

Now here's a new one. Ttwo or maybe three recent occurrences of the "unknown
error" have now generated a new error box which says:

DDE Server Window: soffice.bin - Appplication Error
The instruction at "0x05257455" referenced memory at"0xff00000c". The memory
could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program.

I think Dr. Watson should be running in the background until the crash occurs
again in order to capture information.

The attachment works OK in Rev. 1458937 under windows 7, also when password is
applied.
Can you use Dr. Watson?

I suggest roll-back to a previous OpenOffice version that worked OK for you,
till the new 4.0 is out.
Previous versions can be downloaded at

The suppied file is a recovered version. By now every .ods which I posses has
been recovered many times.

Also, failure to open a file is not the most common problem, usually my files
open, I start editing and at a random interval later the unexpected error
occurs and I am offered recovery of the file or files.

Wish I knew what happened to the version of this comment that I (thought I)
posted 3 days ago.
Gist was:
1) Dr Watson log file contained only an access error to IE which had occurred a
day earlier than the OO error I was looking for. How do I persuade Dr W to pay
attention to my OO problem?
2) I'm using XP, trying to tidy it before I go back to my Windows 8 upgrade
which died after 3 weeks and can only be repeated with a working copy of an
earlier Windows in place. My OO version is therefore different - Help says:
OpenOffice.org 3.4.1
AOO341m1(Build:9593) - Rev. 1372282

Many thanks and sorry about the delay
