The thrift build environment leverages .gitignore extensively to allow for [builds in the same directory|http://wiki.apache.org/thrift/ThriftInstallation] as the source.  It would be preferable to allow for an external build directory such that the source directory could be read-only.  This would allow for an extensive simplification of .gitignore and easier cleanup of builds, and maintain a pristine source directory.
