Isssues after upgrading / updating SA
Hello forum,
Recently i have upgraded SA from 2.64 to 3.1.1 and everything was working
great except to the following:
1. I am getting from time to time errors in the maillog via MailScanner
"spamassassin time out". I once had that problem with the previous version
of SA and resolve that by adding memory to the PC (upgraded to 256 MB). Can
you advise how can i resolve the issue? since i cant add more memory to the
PC.
2. I run sa-update on my linux machine to update the rules and afterward run
spamassassin --lint. The output was a warning as follows "warn: config:
warning: score set for non-existent rule HTML_MESSAGE". I once added
HTML_MESSAGE to local.cf in order to set a higher score for that kind of
test and there was no problem. Is the specifc rule was removed due to the
update? How can i fix that?
Kindly regards,
Yossi

Hello Ken,
Thanks for your quick response.
OK here are the details.
vmstat shows as follows:
procs memory swap io system cpu
r b w swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy
id
0 0 0 146252 55264 15596 39084 2 1 4 0 1 4 2 2
2
free shows:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 255772 201340 54432 0 15680 39084
-/+ buffers/cache: 146576 109196
Swap: 326584 146252 180332
Both MailScanner and SA( i am not sure for SA) perform RBL check.
1. What are your recommendations?
2. How can i verify that SA perform RBL test?
I am not running a caching nameserver the resolv.conf point to ISP dns
server.

"spamassassin time out" can be caused by slow dns lookups. I assume you
are using the rbls in S.A., and not MailScanner? Are you running a local
caching nameserver?
What do `vmstat` and `free` say? Any swap in use? If yes, get more ram.
1gb ram would be a good place to start for a MailScanner/SA with caching
nameserver.

Only disable it after you verified that your first ns is working! If it is not,
then remove it from your resolv.conf - maybe it's just plain wrong!
For SA you use skip_rbl_checks yes, compare
http://spamassassin.apache.org/full/3.1.x/dist/doc/Mail_SpamAssassin_Conf.html

remove it
[5830] dbg: dns: NS lookups failed, removing nameserver 212.150.48.169 from
list
that's the cause for your timeouts.
fix the dns or remove it from your resolv.conf.
and once dns works stop the dns testing it just takes time.

1. SA3.x seems to need a little more memory + cpu than 2.x. If you can't add memory just up the time-out value for your milter or other piping mechanism you're using.
2. Lots and lots and then lots more has changed in the configuration between 2.64 and 3.1.1. Read the documentation on configuring 3.x. When I upgraded from 2.64 to 3.x and then to 3.1.1 I needed to almost completely rewrite my configuration.
