Try adding a -Duse-pic=true to your command line or use the autotools
build. The Ant build does not attempt to detect whether the compiler
needs an explicit instruction to create relocatable code.
Hi,
I get the following error with -Duse-pic=true option.

Hi Paul,
I am able to build log4cxx on Solaris. As you pointed out initially I
used 1.2.2 versions of apr and apr-util as it was mentioned in INSTALL
file. Now I am using 1.2.12 version. The main issue was with the "make"
version. But I did not test again with 1.2.2 version of apr with the new
"make" in place.

I just noticed that Mr. Chakravarthula is referring to 1.2.2 of apr and

But Mr. Tveit says to use 1.2.12, which I think is correct.
Could this be the problem?
I also notice that the "INSTALL" file that comes in the .zip download
includes the following:

The following files placed in the lib directory:
apr-1.2.2.tar.gz
apr-util-1.2.2.tar.gz

which perhaps may have led Mr. Chakravarthula to think the 1.2.2
versions should be used...

I don't think you have to run aclocal before ./configure.
Just download apr
(e.g. http://mirrorservice.nomedia.no/apache.org/apr/apr-1.2.12.tar.gz)
uzip and then run:
$ ./configure
$ make
Then download apr-util
(e.g.
http://mirrorservice.nomedia.no/apache.org/apr/apr-util-1.2.12.tar.gz)
unzip and then run:
$ ./configure --with-apr=<path to apr source dir> $ make
Then download log4cxx
(e.g.
http://www.powertech.no/apache/dist/logging/log4cxx/0.10.0/apache-log4cx
x-0.10.0.tar.gz)
unzip and then run:
$ ./configure --with-apr=<path to apr source dir> --with-apr-util=<path

Maybe the different versions of make is a problem?
I have very little experience with make, so I cannot say if this
really is a problem or not.
Did ./configure return any error messages?

Since it appears what you really are having is a APR build problem,
you might have a wider pool of Solaris users on apr-user that might
recognize your roblem.
You do not mention what version of Solaris (8, 9, 10, Sun or
OpenSolaris) you are using and what processor (SPARC, x86 or x86-64).

Actually, INSTALL should have just referred to the APT and HTML build
documentation and "Introduction" and everything later should have been
removed.
In building the release, I used APR 1.2.11 and APR-Util 1.2.10 (which
corresponds to APR 1.2.11) since APR 1.2.12 did not compile with a
straight VC6. However, that difference should not matter on Solaris.

I have managed to build log4cxx 0.10.0 on Solaris, but I have not
used maven or ant.
I downloaded apr and apt-util from http://apr.apache.org and
built them separatly:
apr:
$ ./configure
$ make
apr-util:
$ ./configure --with-apr=<path to apr>
Then I built log4cxx:

apr-util>
$ make

Hi Jostein,
I tried following two approaches
1. Downloaded apr-1.2.2 and apr-util-1.2.2 source code. Executed
aclocal, "automake --add-missing" and then ./configure
before executing make on apr. I get the following make error.
configure.in: no proper invocation of AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE was
found.
configure.in: You should verify that configure.in invokes
AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE,
configure.in: that aclocal.m4 is present in the top-level
directory,
configure.in: and that aclocal.m4 was recently regenerated
(using aclocal).
configure.in:134: required file `build/install-sh' not found
configure.in:134: `automake --add-missing' can install
`install-sh'
BUG.am: `install.sh' is an anachronism; use `install-sh' instead
make: no `Makefile.am' found for any configure output
2. Installed apr-1.2.2 and apr-util-1.2.2 binaries. ./configure on
log4cxx gives me following error.
checking whether g++ accepts -g... (cached) yes
checking dependency style of g++... (cached) none
checking how to run the C++ preprocessor... g++ -E
checking for doxygen... no
./configure: line 21067: syntax error near unexpected token `,'

I have managed to build log4cxx 0.10.0 on Solaris, but I have not
used maven or ant.
I downloaded apr and apt-util from http://apr.apache.org and
built them separatly:
apr:
$ ./configure
$ make
apr-util:
$ ./configure --with-apr=<path to apr>
Then I built log4cxx:
$ ./configure --with-apr=<path to apr> --with-apr-util=<path to apr-util>
$ make
$ make check
