There is some adjustment needed on Ubuntu based systems - either renaming of a file or creation of some form of link. The OP is reporting problems at the desktop-integration stage; on Ubuntu and derivatives these usually arise from the presence of LibreOffice components; the quick fix is removal of the LibreOffice components as I have indicated. Adjustment of a filename or creation of a link is the longer method. OpenSUSE may already have this adjustment made.

If you are installing on a linux version that comes with LibreOffice pre installed, you should remove all traces of LibreOffice before installing OpenOffice. Do this by using a terminal and entering

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice*

The trailing "*" is important! Now OpenOffice should install correctly.

By changing some filenames or links it is possible to install OpenOffice alongside LibreOffice, but I do not remember how to do that.
