What would you do with field defect rate predictions?
Hi
I have been examining Tomcat bugs and have been looking for ways of
predicting the field defect rate, that is, predicting at the time of release
the number of field defects in each time interval after the release. I am
brainstorming possible applications for this research.
I was wondering what you all think Tomcat can do (or do better) if it had
field defect rate predictions. Your input would really give my research a
reality check.
Thank you very much for your time.
Paul Li
P.S. I did some preliminary modeling for Tomcat using achieved data:

I know what 42 is. Actually, forced by our operations department (wink
at andrew), the question what is the answer to life, the universe and
everything is a part of our questionnaire which we use in interviews.
It's located right between
Threading and Middleware Sections:
D.4. What do you have to care for if accessing variables in different
scopes in a multithreading environment.
E.1 What is the answer to life, the universe and every thing?
F.1. What is CORBA. Which alternative technologies are you aware of.
:-)
Sofar no candidates who couldn't answer E.1 were accepted. Mainly
because they sucked at other questions badly :-)

Hmm,
personally I think it's more useable for users as for developers. I
strongly doubt that the commiters will change anything in the way they
work, probably simple because they do their best right now.
But a user can 'read' from the graph which minor version is actually
suitable for major version switch. Personally I think that the result
will be 16 :-)

This is going to be highly dependant on what codes changes were made
for that release. Some metrics (number of changes, number of changed
files) are easy whereas others (criticality of code changes) are much
harder.

There is no allocation of resources in open source. Each committer
works (or doesn't) on what they feel like / have time for / care about.

The only change I can see right now might be how long we wait between
releasing an alpha/beta and voting on its stability. You wouldn't need
prediction for this, just a graph of number of open bugs against time
with the releases and stability votes marked.
Good luck with the research,
Mark

Thank you very much for your response.
By "field defect" I mean a bug in the Bug Database.
I was wondering if you think predictions at the time of release of the
number of field defects in each month after release can help:
-allocate resources, such as having enough people available to fix problems
-adjust the deployment date, like pushing back the release, or
-identify possible ways of improving the process, assuming that the
predictions are made using software metrics, such as the number of changes
to the code
Thanks

Good Morning Paul-
from what I see I would interpret a greater initial defect rate with open source offerings vs commercial (OS)
but the attenuation over time brings the OpenSource defect rates almost equivalent to their commercial counterpart(s)
Is this correct?
BTW:
This is a great tool to have to understand in a visual sense what happens with defects of commercial offerings vs OpenSource counterpart over time
