htaccess

Hello all

I am trying to password protect a directory on my server 
with the .htaccess file with very little success.

>From what I understand all that need be done is 
the .htacces be placed in the directory where you want to 
be prompted for the User Name and Password. I have done 
this and yet anyone can browse there. Any clues?
