Basic physical size/dpi issue
I should know this one, but I just can't figure it out right now.
I have an SVG file and am using batik-rasterizer.jar to transform it into a
TIFF. Everything runs fine.
But, when I boost the resolution to the necessary 1200 dpi and then print it
out to see how the file looks, it's tiny on the printed page.
If I reduce the dpi to 600 or 300, the physical print size increases.
What am I missing in order to bump up the dpi and keep the physical size
constant?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Thomas,
Thanks for your kind words. If there is interest (and enough requests),
may be we could ask the conference organizers to set up a Batik panel
discussion at the conference. I know Thomas and Christophe will both
attend the conference and they might be interested in running such a
panel discussion. Let's see if other Batikers are attending the
conference and feel a discussion would be useful.
While I wont be at the conference, I could help set up the panel discussion.
I am sorry I won't see your musical application which sounds really cool.
Cheers,
Vincent.

Hello Vincent,
Its indeed sad to hear that you may not be at the conference. It would
be great to show you an application I'm working on. It has taken me
sometime to get it to a prototype stage and now I'm planning on adding
SVG as well.
I just want to say that your writings (Java 2D API book) started me
going in the right direction, toward a graphic solution to my very
dynamic music application (it requires fast and robust graphics). I
like all the SVG features however a solid Java 2D implementation will
be needed to pull off my project. I would never expect to do it with
SVG alone. This is why Batik appeals to me, it is pure Java extended
plus the added features of SVG.
The way I envision using Batik is to draw to the JSVGCanvas with the
usual Java 2D methods while the GVT takes care of SVG. Any examples of
using the JSVGCanvas for direct drawing and automated SVG building (not
only browsing or conversion but rather creation) would be helpful to me.
I'm presently exploring Batik's API and would very much enjoy talking
to Batik users at SVG Open 2003.
Best Regards
Thomas

We are trying to get 1.5 out the door (we got 1.5beta5 out several weeks
ago). Then, the next step would be to round up resources and volunteers
to do a SMIL animation implementation.

Some of the commiters will be there but not all (e.g., I unfortunately
will likely not join).

Re: Basic physical size/dpi issue
Posted by Vincent Hardy <vi...@sun.com>.
Hello,
If you want to keep the print size constant while varying the
resolution, you should specify a widht/height in cm or in units (e.g.,
widht="5cm" height="3cm") in your SVG's root <svg> element and then only
use the -dpi rasterizer option.
For example, if you modify samples/moonPhases.svg to set its
width/height to 5cm/4.5cm and then do:
rasterizer -dpi 300 samples/moonPhases.svg
and
rasterizer -dpi 600 samples/moonPhases.svg
you'll see that the output image has a constant print size. The
-width/-height options on the rasterizer do not take units.
Vincent.
